THIS CAKE WAS INEDIBLE AND A HEALTH HAZARD!!! I bought the medium, gluten free, strawberry short street cake for my birthday party. I live an hour away, so my wonderful partner went to pick it up. He said that the shop almost gave him the wrong cake, but my partner noticed it said Happy Birthday Ida (not my name), and brought it back to the staff after it had already been handed over. That night at the party, we sliced about half the cake and passed it out to our guests. No one took more than one bite. The most awkward polite silence fell over the group. Then I tried it, and realized that the batter was completely RAW inside the center. Additionally, the VERY few "fresh" strawberries in between the two layers were soggy and discolored. The icing was thin and tasted like straight sugar, there was no hint of cream cheese or strawberry flavor in it. I was so embarrassed. I had to ask everyone to stop eating (although no one had taken a second bite anyway, it was so disgusting) because the raw batter could cause a bacterial infection. We threw the slices away and it was the most uncomfortable ending to a birthday party I've ever been to. The rest of the cake sat on my kitchen counter for two days until I could call the bakery and ask for a refund. They wanted me to bring the cake back to prove it was raw, but since I live an hour away they agreed to let me send photos to assess whether I deserved a refund. They replied to the photos with a text that I would receive a refund after ten days. I'm glad because I spend around $50 on this horrible cake. Unfortunately I can't get the experience of my birthday back, and they didn't offer to replace the cake, so I'll never know if they can make a better one. This was the worst cake I've ever had in my life. The friend who recommended this shop to me was at my party and was mortified as well. He said the cake he had from this place before was nothing like this, but if the quality is so inconsistent I would not risk using this bakery for anything other than a dessert cupcake on a random day. I can't imagine if this had happened for my wedding cake, or a huge 50th birthday party or something. It's not like they misspelled my name, or used the wrong frosting - this cake was inedible and a health hazard. I am hoping that the entire party doesn't develop salmonella. Will update when I receive the refund UPDATE: It has been 15 days and I have NOT received a refund even though they assured me I would be refunded within 10 days. When I call, no one answers.

The cake was really beautiful! But the taste was not good and the communication was also not good. I order a raspberry Almond cake. The icing was overwhelming and the cake was dry and flavorless. I called and before we could finish talking the person on the phone rushed me off the phone because they had people coming in the store. She didn't ask for what kind of flavor I wanted but told me to send a message via Instagram. I sent a detailed description of my order. I then recieve a message on instagram asking for my card information which I find uncomfortable to do and unprofessional. I responded asking if I could call back to talk about the flavor and to give my card information over the phone. No response, so I called back a little later to see if I could talk to someone. No answer so I called the next day in which I spoke to someone very nice who took down my full order and card info so I was all set. Some days before the cake is to be picked up I get a call from the same first woman saying I didn't leave my card information. I told her I did and she checked again and was able to find it. The morning I'm supposed to pick up the cake they call me again early and I feel nervous because they are asking me to confirm the details of the cake hours before pickup. I show up for the cake and they try to give me a graduation cake which made my stomach drop but they were just disorganized and didn't have a name written down for my order and had the cake ready after all. Either way ,my grandma thought the cake was beautiful and it made her happy. I wouldn't really recommend this place but they did make a pretty cake and had it ready when it was time for me to pick it up. I attached photos of what I sent them for reference versus what I recieved.

We were SO pleased with the small cutting cake and selection of cupcakes we got from Short Street for our wedding! All their flavors were absolutely delicious (we ended up going with Raspberry Almond, Triple Chocolate Ganache, and Strawberry Short Street), and they were extremely flexible and able to accommodate my dairy- and gluten-free wife. We went in a few months before the wedding and met with Olga who had prepared a ton of delicious cupcake flavors for us to taste (along with some lovely tea), and she was very helpful as we made decisions about how to structure our order for 100+ guests. The pick-up process went relatively smoothly on the day of our wedding, and although the cake stand we rented never made it to the venue, our little cutting cake was adorable, and everyone raved about the cupcakes! Our biggest frustration in the process was that apart from times we could be in the store (which were few since we live out of town), it was difficult to communicate with the Short Street staff dependably. Emails went unanswered, and we experienced a lot of difficulty getting through on the phone to confirm a few changes to our order and make payments. It all worked out just fine in the end, but if you don't live in Asheville, definitely give yourself enough time to play some intense phone tag. Photo credit: Jameykay and Arlie Photography

TLDR: 2 cakes made incorrectly, no resolution offered after one of them was made incorrectly (or at the very least unsatisfactorily) a second time.

—

My experience with SSC was incredibly disappointing. After making the two items I ordered incorrectly, a piña colada cake that was supposed to have happy birthday written on it and a lemon pound cake with no icing, I decided to still pay for them with the expectation that the pound cake (which I told them was a gift) be corrected for pickup the following day, as I was headed out of town with the piña colada cake that day. I came back the next day to pick up the pound cake, which appeared to be corrected because there was no icing, and upon cutting into it later i realized that it, too, was seemingly made incorrectly. When I reached out to the business, understandingly frustrated and requesting a replacement cake and a refund since this was the second time they made my order incorrectly, I was told that I would need to return the cake that I had purchased as a gift in order to receive a refund, which is absurd. I was also told that the bakers agreed that they had made my item correctly, when in fact they did not. And I don’t mean to say that I got the correct order and just did not like what I received. I mean what I received was not the correct order. If I had ordered a plain poundcake, I would’ve been satisfied because the cake itself was well made, buttery, and rich. however, what I ordered was a lemon pound cake with no icing and there was no lemon flavor in that poundcake whatsoever. There was no scent of lemon and no taste of lemon. As I mentioned to the business owner, or whoever runs their email account, it was not that there was not enough lemon flavor, it was that there was none. and, the friend who also tasted the cake - because I asked her to make sure that I was not missing the flavor in haste - confirmed twice that it had no lemon flavor. Without any doubt, I am confident that I received a plain poundcake. And again, the poundcake tasted good, hence the two stars I gave the business, but it is not what I ordered. and the fact that there was no resolution offered for the continued mistakes after not having the writing on the other cake (after they were made aware of the mistake) and for the first poundcake with icing on it, clearly shows that they have no interest in correcting their wrongs.

and to be clear, I was willing to try and get the cake back from my friend. when she notified me that her plane was delayed and she was still at the airport, I was on the highway from West Asheville within 10 minutes, driving to the airport to go get the cake. I was maybe 15 minutes away when she notified me saying that she had to board her plane before I would make it. had it not been for that, I was well prepared to take the cake back to the business so they could taste it and confirm that there was no lemon flavor in it. As I said to them in my email, I had no reason to lie or misrepresent what I received.

aside from being frustrated, I’m actually disappointed because I was looking forward to being a repeat customer with this business. I had heard a lot of good things, and several of you have made really great reviews, but this is absolutely ridiculous. really hoping that this review prompts them to serve their customers better in the future, especially when they’re first...
