⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3.5/5)
Old-school Chinese spot in Astoria — nothing fancy about the menu, but the staff was accommodating when I mentioned I’m vegan. They went off-menu and made me a couple of custom dishes that hit the spot.
The Kung Pao Tofu was solid — I expected a little more kick since it’s a Sichuan dish, but it was flavorful and satisfying. The portion was huge (hello leftovers!) though a bit light on tofu, probably since the meat was swapped out. I added more spice and tofu at home, and it made for a great next-day meal.
The real standout was the General Tso Tofu, another off-menu creation they kindly prepared for takeout. The texture of the fried tofu was impressive — tender inside and the sauce had great balance.
All in all, I’d give Golden Star a 3.5 for food, but extra points for the friendly service and willingness to accommodate vegan requests. I live over in Long Beach, WA, so it’s just a quick trip across the bridge — and yes, I’d definitely go back next time...
Read moreI don’t know what I was expecting. I know it’s not authentic Chinese food, but even so I wasn’t impressed. I ordered Kung Pao, surprisingly one of the more authentic items on the menu. (no dim sum or xiao long bao, no chongqing hot chicken, no chicken feet, etc.)
when i got my food, it seemed as if there was no chicken and only celery, like kung pao celery. it was also undercooked and lukewarm. I also ordered steamed rice but was given pork fried rice, which i may or may not have been charged extra for.
I took it home and threw it in the wok and added a few sauces but i shouldn’t have to have tampered with it. Lao gan ma sauce saved it.
My girlfriend ordered beef chow mein but they gave her beef chow yuk, and i understand a lot of small town chinese restaurants get those mixed up. But it didn’t make her happy, as she wanted noodles, and we understand now if we wanted that we should have ordered the lo mein instead.
The waitress was very nice, so...

It came with the complimentary soup of your choice of either egg flower or hot and sour. I chose the hot and sour one, it was delicious! Not overbearingly spicy, tangy and thick consistency. The meatless lo mein was perfect for my taste. Not greasy, soft with slight crunch and good flavor! I really enjoyed the chicken green bean stir-fry the most! The green beans were cooked good, still had a crunch to them. The chicken was cooked to perfection! The sauce in it was divine! Reminded me of terriyaki sauce, but not sure what sauce is was... super delicous! The barbequed pork was good even with it's sauce! Will say though, the chinese mustard is spicy, but it was also yummy too! The prices are still really reasonable, and for how much I got, it was...
