We came to Astoria to meet some family and relax , we love the area there is so much to do and many places to thrift which is a favorite activity of my sister and myself. We loved the art deco architecture of this hotel. They are 100 years old this year. ||The breakfast was good that we had each morning and the rooms are fairly priced and comfortable but we were absolutely tickled with the banter of the check in clerks , an outgoing man with a contagious smile contrasted with his tiny coworker with her long long ponytail. They made us laugh with their light hearted volley and it was clear they enjoy what they are doing and this really resonated with us for the whole stay. We encountered each clerk separately later in the trip and they greet people like you’ve been old friends. Times have been difficult for the world and it is such a breath of fresh air to have such enjoyable interactions in hospitality. |The beds are comfy , and our room was pristine. |Parking was not an issue at all but on Sundays there is a maker market and you can’t park in any of the parking you normally can. Worst case we had to walk three blocks away which was fine because your employees recommended Blue Scorcher which we needed to work off anyway. |There is so much wildlife in the area and as I said before the thrifting is abundant and there are charming stores on every block. |For food we enjoyed going to the brewery by the waterfront fort George and we also enjoyed a place called Merry Time. The bartender was really nice and we wish we had more time to spend there and bring the bubbles to watch sports while we sip cocktails. ||The weather was not great but not awful either and the sun made a few appearances. There is a roof top deck at the hotel that offers a panoramic view of the charming city. ||We did not get to see the column but want to come back and if we do we will absolutely book this hotel again and make more time to visit old and new places to shop and eat. ||Ultimately though, we were steered toward all the shops and dining options by the staff at the hotel. This is just a really fun group , and if you ask, the small one with the big laugh and the long long ponytail (we are so bad with names many apologies ) she will show you every rainbow picture she took and gets excited showing like it’s the first time she’s seen it. It’s adorable , unusual and so very refreshing. The young man was also serving breakfast one day and we enjoyed listening to him sing along to the gospel style music playing in the lobby. ||We didn’t get to meet too many more of their staff but it is clear this company has hand picked a staff that can make a tired stranger feel right at home. My sister and I are sure the entire team must be equally as wonderful. ||Long story short , wonderful beds , superior service , charming accommodations and beautiful location. Cannot say enough. |I hope they see this. Thank you Hotel Elliott and thank...
Read morePros: I've seen other reviews here that say the rooms were a mess. With the issues this hotel seems to be going through right now I believe it, but ours was beautiful. The view was great, the bathroom was gorgeous, the bed was comfy. No problems at all with the room.
Cons....... We booked three rooms on one reservation, each for two nights. The person who booked the rooms was not scheduled to arrive until 9:30p.m. The rest of us, there around 6p.m., were told that we can't check in until the person who books the room is present with ID and the credit card used to book the room. We offered to do whatever they needed in order to change the reservation to our names and check-in, but we were told "not possible. against our policy..." We were floored. We are standing at the front desk, holding our 4 year year old daughter, requesting a solution to what seems to be a perfectly solvable problem, and we were told "no". They told us we could cancel the reservation and re-book under seperate names, but this would incur a cancellation fee equal to the price of the first night of our reservation. In the end, this is what we were forced to do, being that it was an event weekend in astoria, there were limited optoins available elsewhere, and it was past time for our 4 year old to get to bed.
In the morning I spoke with a different front desk attendant, Landon. He was incredibly kind, and after I explained the situation he told me this was entirely avoidable. There IS a mechanism to solve this problem, and we were not offered or allowed to use it the night before.
We were treated as if we were trying to defraud the hotel out of a night stay. We tried MANY times to talk to a manager and were told the manager only communicates by e-mail with guests. In the morning I requested a phone call from the manager to sort out what happened, and find out why we were not offered the solution that Landon told me about - no follow up.
A message to the owners/managers/stakeholders: Take a look at the last six months or so of reviews. The issues that we ran into, especially related to speaking with a manager, come up repeatedly. You have a management issue on your hands. The policies that your front desk are enforcing have zero humanity to them, and your guests are being treated as if they are unreasonable at best, or criminal at worst.
At the end of my re-booking process I was told (and this is verbatum) "I'm doing you a favor by letting you stay tonight. I was given the authority to remove you from the hotel." I wonder if this authority was given by phone, or by e-mail?
If you want to stay in a nice hotel in Astoria, book the Bowline. We cancelled the rest of our stay at Hotel Elliott, stayed at the Bowline, and had the type of experience one would expect from a hospitality-driven...
Read moreIt's ok. On the south side of the building there is some machinery that will kick on that has a horrible high pitched whine that will drive you insane at night. I think it's the main AC for the building or something
Each room has a small portable AC unit which can be pretty loud if you use it, but that noise from outside is the worst. I don't know maybe it's coming from another guests AC unit.
There was zero traffic noise or crowd noise. My second night here it was quite cold and that outside machine screaming didn't occur almost all night and everything was peaceful.
The windows don't seal much I can feel a draft when your get near them, they are very rusted and don't close tightly. There was scaffolding outside our room and appears that they will be replacing the windows soon. The rest of the building looks pretty nice they did good work remodeling.
The bed is ok, it's not super soft but not too hard either. I have a purple mattress at home so it would be rare for a hotel to compare to that
The parking is abysmal, but apparently Astoria doesn't want to install a parking structure, the hotel doesn't have dedicated parking and much of the parking is 2 or 3 hour until after 6pm . So it's a pain, I didn't know this ahead of time.
The breakfast was.. Not good. My first day they had these egg "patties" and pieces of ham and some hash brown patties (which were the best of all of it). Even though the containers said 160 degrees the food was all cold. They have a microwave there so I guess you could warm stuff up in that but I was pretty disappointed in how things were cold so I left to get food somewhere else. Only the hash browns were decent but you can't really mess those up. The egg "discs" were not good, far too eggy, and cold. I would have preferred they just make scrambled eggs, I know you can get that as a powder even..
The next day they had biscuits and gravy and they were good.
This town is not an early town though so even at 7am your other choices will be limited.
The front desk staff were very friendly and responsive to needs and helping navigate the town
The room has a small fridge and microwave. I unplugged the fridge most nights because it too made a high pitched whine when running.
The television works fine but it's basic cable and there is no guide. I imagine most people use their phone for entertainment now anyway
The location is right in the middle of town so it's easy to walk to many things, shops, restaurants, and you can see the ocean from my room (4th floor) and see the bridge and ships, pretty nice view
If you get a chance you need to go to on to the roof, they have a rooftop terrace and the...
