Nice soft open. The deal with this place is that it's your friendly neighborhood bar. It's not trying too hard to be super cool or gastropubby or anything. Like the original location on North Ave (an age-old institution in this town) founded by the grandfather of the owner, the idea here is a space to connect neighbors.
Drinks: good, cold. Slushy cocktail was on the sugary side, if that's your thing.
Food: solid basics. Good flavor in the burger but not fancy. Good flavor in the hot dog, especially the mustard, but not fancy. I ordered a corned beef special--again, straightforward and classic presentation with soda bread and cabbage. Not some kind of gourmet or foodie indulgence.
Service: very friendly and nice. This is a place where you want to be a regular.
Space/location: excellent. Cool bar space, not TOO cool, just extremely comforfable. And this side of the park needs this. There are other solid bars around but this is a hallmark location. Lots of locals were fans of the bike shop that used to be here, but another place that serves the neighborhood is here now, which is good. (And also a Jimmy John's next door, which is fine.)
I look forward to coming here often. Other bars have tried to be fancy, to carry a million beers, to style themselves as upscale foodie locations. This place does not try to be those things and I think that is going to...
Read moreSo what did we like? It is a neighborhood bar as others have stated. A little tucked back off the main road. It has a nice atmosphere inside. There are a number of tv's, so it is a great spot to watch sports. We also had good interactions with the servers and bartenders. Also, the other folks there were pretty chill. It was a good crowd. There was a decent choice of beers on tap, and the menu separates them by type (IPA, Wit, etc).
The food, however, was a bit on the lower side of the scale, probably 3 stars at best. Fries were a bit soggy, and tasteless. The burger was mediocre. The tots were ok, but the portion was a bit lacking.
It's great as a hangout spot with friends, but as another stated, it's not a gastropub or foodie joint. If they raised the bar on their kitchen, this would be...
Read moreMy friends and I had a disappointing visit to Manny's Grant Park recently. Despite arriving well before closing time at 2:15 PM, we were met with hostility from the bartender, a heavy-set Caucasian male behind the bar. He loudly and aggressively yelled at us to leave, claiming they were closed, despite the bar being full of patrons. When my friend, who is also a bar owner, attempted to inquire about the early closure, the bartender's demeanor only worsened. He yelled profanities and displayed a complete lack of respect and tact, which was embarrassing and disrespectful to paying customers. This kind of behavior is unacceptable in the hospitality industry. Overall, our experience at Manny's Grant Park was marred by this incident, and I would caution others...
