Taqueria La Herradura — Restaurant in Auburn

They gave me the “Americano Special”. My husband came here a bunch while assigned to the area, he is from Mexico. All his coworkers are Mexican, they all ordered lunch here multiple times and loved it. He was soooo excited to take me here. He raved about their food. We both got molcajete, mine was carne his was mariscos. Mine came out literally 2 minutes after I sat down. I thought that was strange but it looked amazing so i dug in. I took off the asada covering the top and to my horror I saw a bunch of chopped up carnitas and chicken. I tasted it and it was extremely dry and old and not a lick of seasoning, there were a few plain shrimp thrown in also with ZERO seasoning. I dug in deeper and to my utter shock, there was rice and beans at the bottom. That is NOT what a molcajete is, nor is that how it described on the menu. It was disgusting, and every single thing in it was unseasoned, (not even a sprinkle of salt) and old. I ate 2 tortillas with the unseasoned asada and cheese. It felt like a joke, like they scrapped someone’s leftovers into a hot molcajete and served it to me. My husband’s molcajete came out 10 minutes later bubbling and overflowing with fresh seafood and looking EXACTLY how it should. I guess this gringa just deserved the Americano Special. Excellent authentic Mexican food at a fair price! Always fresh and consistently great! I’ve tried almost everything on their menu including most of their combo plates that proudly display on one of their walls for you to see exactly what you are getting. Each one of their combo plates is pictured and posted up on an 8”x 11”laminated photo and they are easy to see (and temptingly delicious looking) as you wait in line to order. They have call ahead ordering but even if you walk in and order it is always ready in less than 10min (usually in 5min). Don’t miss out on this place it never disappoints! Except for the seating! It had only very limited inside seating no outside seating. While you wait for your food they offer a “help yourself” free fresh made chips and salsa and a salsa bar with other fresh condiments for your order along with small paper bags and plastic lidded containers so you can choose to take it with you or eat...

Old Town Auburn, CA: Taquería La Herradura (Horseshoe Taco Shop) - Wonderfully delicious in every way. Absolutely huge portions for a good price. Best salsa bar I've ever seen: pico de gallo; guacamole; multiple heat levels of salsas; spicy onions; pickled nopales; pickled spicy carrot, onion, & jalapeño mix; radishes; limes; and a unique salsa de crema (kind of like a Mexican take on a tartar sauce). Ingenious self-serve process for all-you-can-eat, freshly-fried tortilla chips (super tasty). The Pozole was amazing, as were the tacos, the chile relleno, the enchilada, the taco salad, and the burrito that we had. The rice and beans were very good as well. I also loved that they had all the varieties of meat you could ask for. I had 3 tacos with 3 different meats: lengua, cabeza, and al pastor. All 3 were delicious!
