I don’t take any pleasure in leaving a critical review, but our experience at Bodega Ultima on June 12 warrants some honest feedback. We visited for brunch based on the glowing five-star reviews but were very disappointed. The positives: - Our server, Reese M., was nice and understanding. - The restaurant looks great - It appears they have an extensive collection of wines The negative: - The food I ordered the Pat’s Chicken Sandwich, cheese grits and a coffee. The sandwich was a biscuit with a piece of fried chicken doused in a sauce. I took one bite to taste it and a second to confirm what I thought I tasted (see photo). The grits were basic, topped with barely-melted shredded cheddar and mozzarella. The coffee had the bitterness of having sat too long on a burner. My wife ordered the hummus, cheese grits and coffee. The plate looked like it was assembled from standard grocery store items - nothing you couldn’t pick up at a Publix. We chose not to finish our meal. To Reese’s credit, she reduced the bill a little. We were still out $45.17. We paid and went elsewhere. After scrolling through the reviews more carefully, I noticed a pattern: many five-star ratings from accounts that appear to leave five stars everywhere they go.

Gosh! Can’t speak to that earlier review, everyone has a bad day. But I can tell you I came by for a coffee, way too early to do other Surry Center shopping… I had an other worldly experience. GRITS! Transparency- We live near here , have been here lots of times , but never ever tried these world class cheese grits. OH My! These stone ground SC grits could not be better. Maybe the best grits on the east coast. And I’m an expert about this. The grits were perfectly cooked, not too stiff, not too runny. Right amount of salt. The cheese-OMG- copious and sharp! Buy one bowl, you will scrape the bottom, and fight urge to order second. DO NOT share with anyone. That will not end well for either of you! The Wheat toast was also bodacious. Enjoyed a wee Cortado. And the best part? None of this broke the bank. If you love cheese grits…You owe it to yourself! Yes to Chef Mike! Yes to Reese and fellow server Caroline. But the Biggest Cheer - goes out to the early bird cooks (names?!?) who got there at crack of dawn and put the grits water on to boil! They are superhero! perfect 10!

We decided to try a new place for breakfast/brunch. The bar is beautiful, with an extensive selection of liquors and wines. We debated sitting there, but it was such a pretty day, so we chose outdoor seating. This is a pet friendly place, so several people were able to bring their dogs. The owner (Cary) has his beautiful, friendly, and well behaved terrier, ASH, who welcomes and greets everyone. The service was prompt and attentive. I ordered the Salmon BLT Bagel with an egg, lox, bacon, tomato, cream cheese, and avocado - DELICIOUS! My friend ordered the Jamon Croissant, which had egg, ham, and provolone. She also ordered a side of cheese grits, which was a generous portion - enough for two. With the exception of a few bites shared with Ash, she enjoyed hers! We can't wait to go back and suggest you give it a try!

I do not usually like lavender drinks but the lovely waitress recommended it when I asked. I was intrigued by the mixture of white mocha (which I love) and the lavender. I full well expected it to taste perfume and just as plain awful as they usually do... BUT I was pleasantly surprised when it tasted AMAZING! Still not a lavender fan but it is by far the best one I have ever had with a shuttle yet refreshing Lavender taste and a wonderful white chocolate finish with a hint of lavender. I was amazed that it did not overwhelm my taste buds and more so that you could taste all of the flavors, not just the lavender. The waitress did excellent from start to finish, we were never rushed by any of the staff and it was a wonderful and very relaxed no pressure atmosphere! My kids were wanting to explore the patio a bit as we had been at appts all morning so they weren't quite willing to sit right when we got there and the fountain caught their eyes immediately! The papas were amazing, skip the ketchup and go straight for whatever blessing of sauce they provided! It's sort of like a lite BBQ flavor with zing and taste bud awakening flavors. The sauce definitely pushes these to the top of my must have list. The goat milk yogurt parfait is delicious. Ps.Goat milk is gross and most days the flavor sucks and makes we gag. But this coat milk yogurt with honey, granola and fruit was blissful on my tongue. It was creamy like a freshly whipped cream cheese, the honey was fantastic by itself but they complimented each other very nicely with just the right amount of sweetness. I was however disappointed by one item. The croissant breakfast sandwich was good but didn't hold up to what the rest of food and beverage led me to believe it was going to be. I kind of expected it to take center stage with it's aioli. I love aioli but this was lacking by possibly the amount of aioli that was on it or by the flavor of the aioli. I definitely recommend getting extra maybe just going straight for the papas sauce! Maybe add a little salt and pepper to the egg. Though the bacon was perfectly crisp and flavor full. Over all I'm impressed, ready and excited to go back...

Maybe I'm not cool enough yet to "get" it but deconstructed food makes no sense to me. Particularly when I get something to go.

I like supporting local business especially being in the military. We take so much, your roads for our training, prime real estate for our bases, and your taxes for our paychecks. So when I was hankering for a lox and bagels I googled a spot that had it instead of going to Paneras.

Bodega Ultima confused me. First because the name. I was expecting a Spanish shop. Maybe a fellow New Yorkican. Ultimately no, as I could tell from the green wrought iron columns and the Volvo's, Mercedes, and Audis in the parking lot.

I still held hope that lox and bagel would be proper especially considering the founders name of Goldsmith. The "lox" was a smoked salmon, not salt cured. In fairness to the restaurant it's near next to impossible to find lox lox outside of New York. But what killed me was when my food was ready I was asked if I wanted any flatwear. In my mind I thought "Why would I need flatwear for a sandwich". When I got to my car I knew why she asked. My food was deconstructed. Additionally I had ordered regular cream cheese. I got one regular and one oregano/garlic/thyme concoction.

Ultimately the food was good. I'm not going to knock that. The staff was also pleasant. Had hoped not to have garlic breath but that's...

Food was pretty good, service was not. We weren’t greeted as we walked in and had to flag down the bartender to ask if we seat ourselves. This was after we stood at the bar for a few minutes, looking confused and no one said anything. Anyway, we’re at the bar and the bartender takes our order. She was very pleasant. While we’re waiting for our food, we watch other servers touch their phones, their hair, their faces, etc…while also touching the rims of patrons glasses and coffee cups. One particularly bold server texted constantly directly across the bar from us and then immediately touched clean cups and plates. Our food comes out, and about 20 seconds later, the server comes back and asks me if I’d “touched my food yet”. I hadn’t. She grabs my plate, hands me another, and says that she gave us the wrong food. She then takes the “wrong food”, and serves it directly to another table. The food was good…Pat’s chicken sandwich was moist and flavorful, burger was delicious and perfectly cooked, fries were pretty decent, potato salad was awful. No one checked on us at all while we ate, we had to ask for every condiment, no water was refilled. Food was good, but not excellent enough to overcome subpar service. Probably...
