Filberts is a quaint dining experience. The atmosphere was charming and the staff were friendly.
The wine selection was excellent.
We ordered the shrimp risotto to start. Unfortunately the rice was undercooked, leaving a crunching texture in your mouth. Not even close to being al dente. It was sprinkled with chopped tomatoes and a vinegar glaze of some sort. I felt the acidity overwhelmed the creamy richness of the dish. The shrimp were excellent.
We ordered salmon and "ribeye" entrees. The salmon was cooked well and was tasty. I can't critique it much because my date ate it all. I think that's a good sign.
The "ribeye" is in quotes because I have serious doubts it was a ribeye cut. I ordered it medium rare and what came out should have been a crime against that cow.
It was grilled seared, with those crosshatch grill marks, leaving the rest of the steak tough and gray. It lacked a seared crust and browning. It was poorly seasoned, hardly any salt. The fat was NOT rendered. Leaving tough cold bites of fat in your mouth. Despite the outside of the steak looking gray and depressing they still somehow managed to overcook it also. The worst of both worlds. Under seared exterior with a dry and over cooked medium well center.
The steak was skinny, less than an inch in height. It was either not a ribeye or an extremely cheap cut of meat, costing $52!!! That's an expensive steak, even for Portland!
Filberts can charge these ridiculous prices due to their remote location but you're better served driving into Portland for the same price but...
Read moreCeliac beware, no options except for very sad overpriced salads full of cheese. Salad is cold including the meat. It was $18 for a salad I could have compared to McDonald’s. I’ve had decent salads. This was not it. It was inedible. The chicken, cold, dry, crumbled in my mouth…tomato’s served whole. Server didn’t seem to care I didn’t touch it. She asked if it was an allergy….i hate drawing attention to this it’s not my fault I can’t digest gluten. Anyway…salad was was soggy and seemed previously prepared, at least a day old. You can’t get a hot hearty meal here for dinner if you’re gluten free. Meanwhile everyone else is enjoying heavy hearty meals and I’m starving. Not worth the price or the time. There’s a gluten free bakery across the street, they’re just snubbing people at this point. There’s no excuse for not having gluten free options. Absolutely no excuse. The next option was the short rib covered in cream sauce for $33. If you gotta cover everything in cream sauce it’s not good quality. And most of the time being gluten free means having to limit dairy as well. Celiac comes with lactose intolerance most of the time. Honestly this was the worst dining experience I’ve had in a long time. I wish they would have taken my meal and comped me for the worst salad I’ve had in my life. If you want overpriced canned cream of mushroom soup sure check this place out. Absolutely awful and...
Read moreThe food was between good and great. My son, wife, and I went here for the 1st time. Sat on the balcony and really enjoyed our time and the atmosphere. We got stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer, which we're great. Had clam chowder, which was good, and my son had Mac and Cheese, and I had fish and chips. My wife had the salmon, which was $43 itself. She gets salmon wherever we go, and salmon is her favorite food. She did say she has had better for cheaper at a lot of places.
Now, our goal bill for the three of us was $150, so expect to pay for what you are eating. However, the reason for the 3 stars is really about the charge. My family and I travel quite often and try new or different restaurants all the time. I can't remember in the past five years a restaurant charging me a surcharge for using my credit card. I mean, how many people are really going to have $150 cash, so we paid an extra $4 (3%) surcharge. That did not sit well with me. I almost gave our server less of a tip because of this, but she was good, so I did not want to penalize her. Total bill with the surcharge and tip, $175 dollars. That much for all the food, you would think they would wave the surcharge just like the 10s of 1000s of restaurants around the country.
Anyways, the food was good but not completely convinced it is...
