Jan 2022 update: sadly my previous review below has become somewhat outdated, at least for now until the buffet is open again. My favorite thing to order for take out or delivery through Uber Eats is the sambar and rad am soups. I always got the sambar at the Buffay, but now I realize these soups are my favorite items on the entire menu. They both come with a side of rice. The elegance and balance of the ingredients in the soups makes them my favorite dish of any restaurant in Austin. I have even going out of my way to try the sambar at other Indian restaurants, and most of them don’t have half the flavor of this one. And the rice pilaf is season two just perfectly. It is my favorite rice side dish I have ever had at a restaurant. So much flavor without the heaviness of fried rice is a perfect balance with the soups. And if I ever get some thing extra to share with a friend, the samosas here are as good as samosas get in my book. A++
Old review: One of the greatest Indian buffets I’ve ever had the privilege to eat at. Actually, I’m even more lucky because I live nearby!
The owners and staff are very friendly people with excellent customer service. The dishes in the buffet are like nothing I’ve had before (even if they are dishes I’ve had a hundred times before). Many unique preparations, flavors and combinations of spice, texture and ingredients. On weekends, there are many even more special dishes I’ve never had elsewhere, including a tandoori fish on the buffet line that is incredible.
The desserts, the naan, & even the soups are all 10 out of 10 in my opinion! If you are visiting Austin and can only try one Indian restaurant during your stay, you will not be disappointed by Asiana, and it may even give a new reason to visit our...
Read moreBest Indian Food in South Austin, maybe in Austin as a whole.
I love Indian food and am so happy this place exists in South Austin. We almost always order to-go, but the food is outstanding. We do always over order because I can't decide what I want to eat and what to save for next time (hint, never save for next time). All of the curries do come with rice, so keep that in mind if you want to order naan bread. You just end up with TONS of carbs and not enough delicious curry and sides.
Huge fan of the Kashmiri naan and all of the lamb delicious are spectacular. I hope this place never closes, never moves, and never changes. Asiana fan for life.
Update: 3/18/2024
I wish I didn't have to write this update, but things have seemed to really go downhill since the new ownership took over. I have ordered a few times from Asiana and the flavors, execution just aren't there like they used to be. I ordered a few month back and the when I called about an issue, the response was "our main chef doesn't work on Tuesdays" and was offered a refund for my entree onto my CC, which never actually happened.
I understand that restaurants have off days and decided to try it again last night, a Sunday. Both my wife and I were unhappy with our curries overall and agreed we'd not come back. Her chicken tikka masala tasted mostly of cream with almost no spice and my lamb roganjosh, a dish I've had 20+ times, didn't even looked properly cooked down, nor was it the right color. In my experience, roganjosh is more of a red color whereas last night it was very brown, the tomatoes were not cooked down, and there was no spice to it.
Really sad to see a great restaurant go downhill. Will try the new place that used to be run...
Read moreGood, not great. I agree with other reviewers saying if you are used to Indian food in other American cities, you will be quite disappointed by the lack of flavor intensity and complexity normally prominent in Indian food. That being said, it filled me up and if you really need Indian food in South Austin, it may be the spot. Other wise, maybe look elsewhere.
Dishes ordered: Samosa - not worth ordering! I only tasted super salty butter flavor? The dough was not right and the cilantro & tamarind chutneys were just no good. Malai Kofta platter - the saag paneer was my favorite but even the paneer was not as fresh as I would like. I couldn't finish the lentil/veg side. It just didn't taste right either. I got roti instead of naan and it was fine, again missing the classic Indian roti perfection.
Service: no compliants, attentive, nice, and very fast at lunch time on a Thursday (not busy at all).
Atomsphere: Clean. They had the same song playing most of the time then they switched it to American pop haha! I will also say the restaurant seemed to attracts mainly non-Indian customers which should tell you something of the food. Also the waiter couldn't spell naan so...take it or leave it.
Sorry for the mediocre review. My standards for Indian food are quite high, I guess. Lots of love to the...
