A Hidden Gem for Asian Comfort Food in Austin – Absolutely Outstanding!
Everything we ordered at this incredible Austin restaurant was absolutely delicious, and the staff were warm, friendly, and welcoming. From start to finish, it was a five-star dining experience.
Black Pepper Beef Udon – The house-made udon noodles were perfectly chewy, and the beef was tender and flavorful. It wasn’t spicy, just rich and savory. perfect comfort food.
Bok Choy in Garlic Broth – This was a standout dish. Whatever they put in the sauce or broth is pure magic. Hands down the best bok choy I’ve ever had.
Pork Soup Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao) – My husband (from Seattle) and soup dumpling connoisseur, said these were the best he’s had in Austin — better than the down-town spots! While we were familiar with the process, They even explain how to eat them for first-timers, which is a great touch.
BBQ Beef Buns – 1000000/10 doesn’t even do these justice. I danced with every bite — the bun was soft and chewy, the beef tender and juicy. I’ve already checked that they’re available for takeout because these are my new go-to when I’m sick or hungover!
Scallion Pancake – Flaky, crispy on the edges, yet perfectly chewy. Flavor-packed and satisfying.
Generous Portions & Great Value – The serving sizes were huge! We had enough to feed a group, but everything was so good we couldn’t stop eating. When our bill came I double checked to make sure they charged us for everything. A fantastic value for the quality and quantity of food. Already planning our next visit.
I asked if they had sambal oelek to add a spicy kick to the noodles (I love mouth-numbing spice), and the owner personally said he’d get it for next time- amazing customer service!
This place is the real deal for authentic Asian cuisine in Austin. From handmade dumplings and noodle bowls to the delicious dimsum appetizers, every dish is made with care and packed with flavor. We're so grateful to have such a fantastic local spot nearby. Highly recommend for anyone craving quality dumplings, noodles, and...
Read moreI'm far from a chinese food expert, so I'll do my best to describe the food I've tried. First and foremost, the mapo tofu is fantastic. It's got a great deal of flavor and can be customized for the amount of heat you want. The Szechuan pepper level is medium, giving a pretty decent level of numbing while letting the flavor shine through. I love the smell of the Szechuan pepper corns and I can pick that up in this mapo tofu. That's not always the case at other restaurants.
I particularly like the wantons in chili oil. They're not very spicy, but the filling is flavorful, the wantons are tender, and the chili oil has a complex and wonderful flavor. They are different from my other favorite Chinese restaurants in town, but very much a favorite of mine.
Soup dumplings are very tasty and I love the dumpling texture. Overall, very solid.
The potstickers are very good with an asterisk. I really wish there was a dipping sauce. The flavor of the filling is amazing. Best I've had. Plenty of green onion and beefy flavor. The presentation is cool and theres clearly a sauce cooked onto the pan fried side. It's flavorful, but I wish it was a bit more pronounced so I could have a better foil for the beef and green onion flavor of the filling. Overall good, but a dipping sauce or a harder sear on the dumpling would make them better for my tastes.
The last item I've tried is the beef and green onion roll. There's some crazy voodoo going on here! That roll is AMAZING. I could eat 5 of those every day, but unfortunately, my waistline wouldn't like that very much! :-)
Service has been mostly good across my 4 visits. My last time in, it was raining hard and the restaurant wasn't very busy. Out waiter's water and tea refill game was VERY strong! Have to admit, it did kinda mess up my afternoon due to frequent restroom breaks, but hey, he never let my tea get below half full. I wouldn't mind more smiles, but everyone has been friendly...
Read moreReviews are greatly over exaggerated. Food here was okay. Very underwhelming. Almost everything seem to lack flavor. The black pepper udon was very bland and tasted like just charred oil. The hot spicy beef noodle soup was also underwhelming, lacking the mala flavor advertised and just tasting like plain beef broth. This was the most disappointing as the noodle texture was very soft and the beef that came with it was just cartilage, no meat at all. The spicy wontons were the best of the three we ordered. It was decent but lacked sauce and was overcooked. All three together were over 40$, not bad, until we saw the portion size. The portion size were quite disappointing. Plate was on smaller side and the noodles barely filled the plate. There was like four bites in the noodle soup. The meal felt like something I could cook at home in a bad way. For the atmosphere I felt alienated, it seemed they were giving a bunch of people some free items to try except us. The “influencers” next to us got free dumplings on the house just for recording their food and the man behind us got his whole meal for free. To be honest this made me feel a certain way on top of the underwhelming food. I would much rather drive to Special Noodle than this place. They use being from California as credibility and use the name of a same restaurant in Santa Clarita, which some post say it comes from but menu differs differently, but this place strays far from those rest. This place wouldn’t compete in the Bay or San Gabriel, it just not worth going out to eat for it. Isn’t bad but isn’t great and more expensive than I would like. I did not like this place and regret spending my money here. Would not recommend, go to...
