We had the mom's mole croissant (absolute star), the pink cake (best gluten free cake I've had by miles), the tamarind maple bar (think donut), masa madre loaf (think of bub and grandma's "house" loaf--or boule adjacent), hot chocolate concha (has chile de arbol), and bean egg and cheese empanada. I will dream about mom's mole croissant for a long time. Everyone at Comadre Panaderia is friendly and intelligent. I cannot speak more highly of Mariela and her team. A gem of a business in a sea of corporate greige--talented people, high quality ingredients and products, very fair pricing, and good customer service. Stop by Central Market and get a brick of beurre de isigny with the flaky salt--Mariela's bread certainly deserves it and nothing less. Update: they open earlier now! Smaller line! Wahoo! I've also had the hijita chocolate donut which is by MILES the best donut in existence, earl grey hijita, vanilla, and strawberry concha, pistachio guava cake (order this for your Asian parents who think everything is too sweet--my dad loved it), and the focaccia--which was better than any foccacia I've had in Italy. When I die, I want to be buried with the hijita chocolate glaze. My God it is so good. Also, Comadre sells Hijita chocolate & chocolate drinks so you dont have to go on 19 freeways to get to Lakeline. Another edit! I've ordered the mx chocolate cake twice and loved both. Best chocolate cake by miles. Mariela graciously accommodated the caramel on the side request for the 2nd. If you're anti sweet, ask nicely for the caramel on the side. I also went for the golfeado and doña dona pop up. My bf loved the hijita donut despite being a peach basil lover (also very good). The breakfast tacos were the best in Texas and extremely competitively priced (the devestatingly cheap Chinese in me was very happy) I should've bought a million of Comadre's sonora tortillas as they are the best of the best. Always...
Read moreProbably some of the best pastries and cafe de olla in Austin! We have been coming here for a few years now and each time we leave with way more then we expected and big smiles on our faces.
Comadre serves unique Mexico inspired pastries that are sure to get your mouth watering. They have some staples like their concha’s, pink cake, etc. they are known for their pink cake but what I suggest is trying their one offs and seasonal offerings, when you can. Such as the “twice baked concha” or the “pistachio pomegranate donut”. All pastries show you why they are a James beard winner!
They don’t just serve fantastic pastries but also great beverages. I will say their cafe de olla is probably my favorite variation of it, besides maybe my mother in laws. They add a little orange to it which helps adds a nice citrus backdrop but also keeps it from feeling overly sweet. It’s the perfect coffee for a spring day. Comadre also serves hot chocolat drinks and other options for those who maybe don’t want coffee.
You can take away or eat at comadre, seating is behind the building. You’ll see a sign inside near the gate entrance pointing to seating.
Few small considerations is more around the reality that this is a smaller bakery, they are very efficient and produce a lot of baked goods but the good stuff is known to disappear. So if you want the biggest selection then show up early and get in line. I have found good success on sundays if we are looking to be there...

Holy moly! It's amazing! It has traditional Mexican baked goods but also includes more modern flavors.
Make sure you get here early! They opened at 9 am and there were already 6 people in line. So far I've tried: The mocha pinguino was so rich and moist and luxurious. The corn bread muffin was moist and you could really taste the corn in the most amazing way. The carrot cake had a real butter cream, not too sweet, and a bright pop of flavor with the passion fruit. Don't forget the savory: The empanada was PERFECTION and went great, but didn't need, the delicious green salsa they serve it with. The savory focaccia was INCREDIBLE the toppings are tossed with a smoked chili pepper from Veracruz that has just a hint of spice - I was skeptical initially because it said it had sweet potato but it just WORKS. You can also get some home made cold chocolate to drink that is SO rich and wonderful. We got plain, pumpkin spice and I think a green tea? ALL were unique and delicious.
I'm excited to try their cookies and conchas!
I've been to all kinds of bakeries -American, Mexican, European, Asian- and this one takes the cake!
Sorry, we ate before we remembered to take...
