Filthy restroom, terrible service, cold food (when it should be served hot/warm), smaller food portions and increased price. I used to recommend Din Ho for anyone looking for authentic Chinese food in town. I don’t think I’ll be recommending it anymore and I certainly won’t be returning.
With inflation, I understand changes in food portion and price. But service was unacceptable. Our server forgot to bring rice to our table when we ordered sautéed veggies and he didn’t even come bother checking on us until we almost finished the dish. We had to actually raise our hand to get his attention, and even then he took forever to get rice to our table. Was the restaurant busy today when we got there? Nope. A bunch of empty tables, not busy at all.
We also ordered Beijing duck with a few other dishes. It came with a sauce that’s 1/3 full, and when we asked for more sauce, we were told it was gonna be $3 for extra sauce. We didn’t even receive the full sauce to begin with. And Beijing duck was really cold. It should be served warm in my understanding?
Half way through our meal, they gave us the check and to-go boxes. I didn’t even bother with them and just set them aside. A couple of minutes later, a different server brought us the takeout boxes again. Were they signaling us to take the leftovers home, just pay and get out? Hey, we were still eating! I know they give checks to customers before they finish their meals sometimes when there’s a shift change but that wasn’t the case. And when they do, they ask apologetically and also ask for customer’s understanding. Not the case today.
Inattentive (almost non-existing and borderline rude) service today with mediocre food left a bad taste in my mouth. It was supposed to a birthday dinner for my mom and I felt bad that I recommended the place for our family. We all left unhappy. Never coming back.
ETA: Din Ho never had good service, less than average at best, but I enjoyed some of their food so I kept coming back. The service we received today was so terrible that even my dad who’s never picky, the nicest guy you’d ever meet, won’t...
Read moreMy favorite Chinese restaurant in Austin. Not only is the food delicious, but the portion sizes are also the perfect amount.
I'm sure many of you have gone to this plaza looking to dine at Ramen Tatsu-Ya, and often finding yourselves discouraged by the long line. Instead I highly recommend going to Din Ho around the corner.
I absolutely love their Walnut Shrimp. Their homemade mayo and honey marinated walnuts are made perfectly, not to mention their shrimp is cooked and tastes wonderful (some restaurants serve shrimp that tastes very shrimpy...if you know what I mean). If shrimp is not for you, I would also suggest the Fried Salt and Pepper Fish. Although the fish isn't crispy, the battered fish is still full of flavor.
My favorite pork dishes are the BBQ Pork and the Chinese Style Pork Chop. Just to be clear, the BBQ Pork is the pork that's displayed in the front entrance, your typical sweet marinated pork slices. The Chinese Style Pork Chop is pork cooked in a savory sweet and sour sauce. Usually Chinese restaurants serve the pork chop with the bones, but Din Ho leaves the bones out, which I think is considerate of them and why I particularly love this dish.
If you like Cantonese style crispy noodles, then the Combination Pan Fried Noodle is a good choice. It's the crispy noodles with BBQ pork, beef, shrimp, and vegetables. Quickly dive into this dish though because the noodles will get soggy from the sauce (although I personally like it soggy since it's more flavorful).
The service can be very slow sometimes, so you might need to take the initiative to get the attention of a waiter to place an order or to refill the rice. With that said I suggest getting an appetizer like the Fried Golden Bean Curd (Fried Tofu) or the Minced Beef with Egg Swirl Soup.
What I love most about Din Ho is that the restaurant is great for groups, and the price is extremely reasonable for the portion size you get. I've always left Din Ho...
Read moreIf I could give this place zero stars I would! My family got to the restaurant at 4:45 PM on a Monday. They were all seated and everyone placed their drink orders by 4:50 while waiting for me to arrive. My family said the waitress was rushing them to order so instead of waiting for me to arrive, they placed their food order. I arrived at the restaurant at 5:30 PM because of traffic and sat with my family - who were all upset because they were all still waiting for drink refills. The restaurant was not busy at all. 15 people at the most. I waited about 10 minutes for our waitress to come and take my drink order. She brought over this glass container of iced tea and quickly walked away. About 5 minutes later she returned with a glass of ice and drink refills for the table. She was ready to bolt when I had to stop her and ask her to take my order. Little did I know the waitress was in such a rush, she had skipped over a few of my family members when taking their food orders. With my food order being taken last I was first to receive my order, which had everyone else pissed off; about five minutes later two other plates come out from the kitchen. My sister, who was skipped over, got a mystery plate of something she did not order. When she informed the waitress about having the wrong order, the waitress told my sister that was what she had ordered. Out of frustration we all raised our voices and told her no it wasn't. My sister said she was fine with the order and left it at that. Two others in my party were waiting for their orders to come out, and 15 minutes later they did. All in all by far the worst experience ever. This was nothing like what I had experienced in the past and I doubt that I or anyone in my family will ever visit this...
