As a Mexican descendant, i will say we each have our own way of making are mexican dishes based on how our abuela taught us. It will vary from household to household and this is what i have to say about this experience.
Lets start with the good… my friends and peers love this place. They highly recommended it. I personally given up trying to find quality authentic Mexican food, but this was really close. I got the comida regular, enchiladas were spot on tasty, very cheesy. My complaint on this plate were the beans. They were refried, i love refried, but lacked all the seasoning, salt, etc. just bland. Probably a bad batch, will try again soon.
With the comida regular comes a taco. I was excited, its not my grandma’s style of crispy tacos, but it had all the things i’d expect from a mexican taco…. First bite into the ground beef was COLD, not warm but cold, i took a bite from the other side, thinking the lettuce chilled that sidd a bit, other side was just as cold. I waited to tell the waitress my compaint, she never arrived to check on us until the end where she handed us our check.
Additional comments: GF got the nacho plate, pretty pricey for bare cheese and tortilla chip plate with steak, but the steak cuts were Gooood! Probably not worth it, its competitively priced for sure but i can see myself make exceptions for it in the near future.
Margaritas, dont ask for a margarita on the rocks. You will get gypped. Its like a 8oz glass filled with rocks and some margarita for 7.75. When you can get frozen for the same price in whats obviously a bigger glass. (12-16oz). GF was definitely annoyed about that. I would have been too.
Atmosphere, a busy mexican restaurant… what did...
Read moreWas the second option for the evening, should have been the last. Saw the name repeating on Austin's Reddit so we gave it a shot. The place seemed packed so we expected a decent experience but unfortunately the food was less than satisfying. I must say the staff were all polite and respectful so it wasn't a totally horrid experience, just suboptimal food and seating.
We visited on a Saturday night. Big crowd, 10 minute wait so not a big deal. We were seated to the back left from the entry point and I'm not sure if that's the bar or if the group behind us was just standing all over but we were essentially sat in a standing crowd of people shouting and drinking. Shouting is fine, it's the weekend and the venue serves alcohol I can understand. People hovering over our table as we eat was very chaotic. I would think they can rope off an area from the bar or wherever these people were to allow those eating a few feet of space from the bar only crowd.
The food...
Chicken enchiladas. The meat could not have been seasoned. It simply is not possible that chicken was prepared in any other manner than being cooked and shredded. Extremely disappointing and stood out from under the sour cream sauce.
The $4.50 queso was a rather small portion for the price and had the consistency of watery paint. It was listed as Chile con queso pero where was the meat? Not one bit to be found in our serving.
Salsa actually had a nice lil light spice to it and perfect consistency IMO. Chips were also prepared in a nice medium manner. Not snapping mid dip but also not a burnt rock.
Again, fine service (other than the seating location) but very disappointing in all...
Read moreAuthentic Tex-Mex food with the the standard Tex Mex options one expects--strong frozen margaritas, chips and salsa, fajitas, carne guisada, tacos, and enchiladas of course. The food was fast and very good, especially with regards to the piping hot cheesy enchiladas. You can't go wrong with the Comida Regular or any of the combination plates. My only disappointment was with the service, which I would classify as "present" but kind of oblivious.
We ordered two Comida Regulars and a plate of carne guisada tacos, which was way more than the two of us could even think about finishing. Our fault, we were famished and had big eyes. We didn't even touch the tacos because the cheesy goodness of the enchiladas distracted our attention. We were too full but happy to take everything home. I hardly ate half of my Comida Regular and then scraped what was left from her plate onto my plate. Our server asked if we needed a couple of boxes, and we said yes. She then took my plate of enchiladas away, which I took to mean she'd box up for us. Nope. She returned with one styrofoam box and nothing else. We boxed out tacos up and waited, then realized that our server had probably just thrown away our plate of enchiladas. If it was a quarter of a plate, well maybe i would understand. However, I had a 3/4 full plate of food which any reasonably attentive server would assume to ask about before throwing away. I brought it up at the register and they offered to replace it of course, but I'd rather the server have a little more common sense and awareness than for us to have to wait around for them to replace the food we...
