I always say that a bad meal can truly ruin my day, and unfortunately I wish I returned my plate. The store was slow, the prices were not comparable to the quality of the food or maybe i just ordered the wrong things. Here's how everything tasted:
I got a taco plate with a beef fajita and goat barbacoa.
-Beans and rice, Tasty, but did not come out warm -fajita taco: a bit dry, extremely underseasoned, the chop on the meat was weird strips -barbacoa, underseasoned, the consommé was just weird, maybe it didn't brew long enough but one of the spices was so pungent and tasted like cleaning products, it was watery and made my tortilla wet -salsas, all overwhelmingly tasteless. -chips and salsa, the best thing i had there following the rice and beans.
The staff is very nice, there was a weird smell when i walked in, and the salt i tried to shake out solidified. I really hope it was a bad cook day because based on the reviews, it did not deserve its ratings. I will be needing a redeeming...
Read moreLa Fruta Feliz, has a family owned feel; it's very clean and the staff are very friendly. They also sell fresh health juices, so that's a plus. I've eaten there with co-workers many times and took my family there this past weekend. We are from South Texas and have lived in Austin for the past 30 years. If you are a tripa or beef cheek barcacoa taco fan, La Fruta Feliz in the top two I've had in Austin for both. We also had their chille reyeno and milanesa torta plates; super recommend both, and the refried beans and rice that came with those plates were way above par. The refried beans were so good that we ordered bean and cheese tacos to go. Their flour and corn tortillas taste home made and are really good; the bread used for the torta was buttery, crisp and probably the best torta bread I've had in Austin. They bring four salsas to the table and they all stand on their own as being seperate but equally as good as many of the Austin Mexican restaurants. Highly recommend y'all try...
Read moreJust went there for breakfast today and tried three different breakfast tacos: migas, chorizo egg and cheese, and bean and cheese. Unlike other breakfast tacos where you might get most of the flavor from adding salsa, their migas and chorizo were both very flavorful. You can actually taste the various spices like Mexican cumin in the chorizo, and I really appreciated that depth of flavor. This may be my favorite chorizo breakfast taco so far in town. The migas taco had onions and jalapeños mixed in too which also made it so much more flavorful, and there was still a nice crunch in the tortillas which is a plus. No one likes soggy tortillas in their migas! Bean and cheese was as expected, didn't stand out like the others. They only had two salsas to choose from which is a bummer since other breakfast taco places in town have spoiled me with an array of condiments. Also, not the best coffee but it does the job [and wakes me up]. Other than that the tacos are worth...
