Mr. Catfish — Restaurant in Austin

The worst experience I've had in Texas in a long time. The only reason they get one star is because you have to give something to leave a review, so this is what they graciously get from me by default.

We ordered our food to go at 2:34pm and went to sit down to wait. They gave us a buzzer to let us know when the food was ready, about 25 minutes later the buzzer goes off so we walk up to the counter to get the food but another lady was there because her buzzer was going off at the same time, (it was no problem) we waited until they gave her what she ordered then we walked up to the counter and the girl says they didn't call us. We showed her that the buzzer was going off and she said that it wasn't for our order that it was for the lady who was just in front of us so we walked back to wait. I overheard the girl say to the other girl that she mistakenly put the same number on two buzzers but I didn't say anything because mistakes happen but I figured they were going to keep preparing our food and it would be ready soon because we ordered after that lady, (I was kind of wondering why she didn't tell us that she has made the mistake instead of whispering amongst themselves) so we wait, and wait and wait and wait, we looked at the time and it had been 46min had passed, so we walked up to the counter and asked if they were almost done?

The girl had an opportunity to say that she'd made a mistake and take ownership of it but instead she was short tempered with us saying "Ma'am, y'all ordered a lot of food so it's going to take a bit to get it together." So I told her that I had heard her tell the other girl about her mix up with the numbers and asked if that was why it was taking so long because everyone that came in after us had ordered, gotten their food and were out the door.

With her snippy attitude told me that, that had nothing to do with it as she stumbled over the words in shock that I heard her.

Just a little sidenote: As much food as we ordered, our order could have been filled with as many people as they served after us if that was actually the case but it wasn't, I'm sure the case was actually because she messed up on the numbers and they had forgotten about us.

Nonetheless we waited and waited.. after another 15 min (bringing our wait time from ordering until that moment to an hour), we walked up to the counter again, she looks at us and says there are 3 more orders in front of us but it was coming in 10 more minutes, which it finally was our turn at 3:41pm but when we got to the car my fries were cold and hard. At that point I was too angry to go back in because my temper can get out of hand so we just left.

I'll never go back to this place again. I try to support all black owned businesses when possible but this is one I don't mind skipping for their unprofessionalism and horrible...

My recent visit to Mr. Catfish left me thoroughly impressed with their impeccable seafood offerings. Opting for the three-piece catfish and three-piece shrimp combo with hush puppies, I was delighted to find that every component was fried to perfection. I went to Mr. Catfish 3 times in 1.5 weeks. The fried catfish filet and kool-aid slush mixed flavored had me in a chokehold. The sides were not consistent unfortunately.

Fried catfish filet dinner with greens and Mac. The 1st time on a Wednesday everything was perfect. Greens were just right with a hint of spicy and the mac was so creamy. I order side of cornbread that actually wasn't need. And the pound cake was delicious. Slush is not as sugary as you would expect so i appreciated that. 5/5.

2nd time I went on the following Sunday midday. Catfish perfect. Husband got whole catfish and loved it. Greens were missing seasoning and did not taste fully cooked. Mac and cheese was naked-ish and unfortunately slush wasn't ready yet but the regular was delicious. 3/5.

3rd time (pic below), went back on the following Friday late afternoon to see if it was an off day. Fish wasn't as crunchy as 1st couple of times but still delicious. Green did not hit at all. Mac was better than 2nd time but not better than 1st. Slush was perfect on an extremely hot day. And tried the sock it to me cake. Oh that sock it me was even better than the pound cake. 4/5.

I may try different sides next time but know the fish is the star...
