Owner: What you said happened, is delusional. No one walks into an Austin bathroom in the year 2024 and starts accusing people of being men. I've never had this situation happen in my life and I think the issue lies with the insecurities of this woman and social justice warriors running to action and immediately taking sides without questioning whether a misunderstanding was blown up. Sounds like this woman needs a mental health check.
Around 5p.m. Monday 9/16 I visited Lost Well due to the news of their upcoming closure. I've been a patron for years, even seeing Phil Anselmo. Everything was going great, until going to the bathroom. After knocking on an occupied stall in the womens' bathroom, I heard a male voice ring out that the stall was occupied. Being 3 drinks deep, my natural reaction was to ask did I end up in the womens' or mens' room? To be clear, yes I have accidentally entered a mens' room before, I am also cautious of male encounters in a women's room as is custom for any women. Instead of empathy or communication I was met with complete hostility. The person I encountered began screaming about how they had a vagina and how rude it was to ask such a thing. As I found my stall, I apologized and admitted I was confused about the situation. Once I left the stall this said person had left and then slammed the bathroom door open to question whether I was the one who asked and how rude I had been. Again I tried to apologize and address the initial confusion which was unheard by them. Once I left the bathroom, I tried to leave Lost Well but on my way out I was essentially "tracked down" by a woman and man who accused me of being ignorant and rude to their bandmante by misgendering them. They also accused me of telling their bandmate 'they were confused' about their gender when in reality, I was confused about which bathroom i was in. Then, our bartender also came out to tell me I was being ignorant and needed to leave the premises immediately for being cruel to a member of the incoming band. At that time, I felt it was best for all parties involved to not start a screaming match and walk away. I do not think my POV would honestly be heard. But as an AFAB: I have zero problem with shared bathrooms, I have advocated my entire life for LGBTQIA+ lives, and spent 10 years+ working directly with LGBTIQA+ population. The way I was treated was degrading, heartbreaking, and 100% discriminatory of my gender. This comes as such a blow for someone who has dedicated their life to helping others and have radiates kindness to all humans, no matter what identification. I'll be honest, I cried all the way home after being verbally assaulted, accused, and humiliated in a parking lot by these people....
Read moreThe last one star review was left by someone who came out on the busiest night this place has ever seen, they were overwhelmed, I’ve been coming here for years and the bartenders here are the fastest in town even on busy nights.
I came here for the first time new in town and not knowing anyone, they welcomed me with open arms and I made so many life long friends here. It’s the best place to see a show, but even when there’s no show it’s the best place to come and have a drink, listen to great music and enjoy the funky atmosphere. The owner is a wonderful person who has done the most to keep live music alive and accessible to people on a budget. The staff are the salt of the earth and are the hardest working people in town. As long as you are polite, friendly and respectful (which is how you should behave in any bar you go to) you will have a wonderful time and have excellent service. I’ve never felt safer in any other bar. It’s a treasure and a second home to me and many others.
This bar and the local bands who play here are deserving of your support. If you want classic weird Austin, this the...
Read moreI'm from Cleveland, Ohio and I was on a business trip to Dallas for 3 weeks. I got a car for the weekend and really wanted to check out Austin, so I drove the 3 hours from Dallas. My friend suggested going to The Lost Well. When he lived in Austin, it was one of his favorite venues.
I came in at about 7:30. Sadly their wasn't a show going on that night and I don't drink. The bartender, who I can't remember her name, gave me a water and said to let her know if I need anything. I talked briefly with her and she made me feel relatively welcomed.
I really liked the feel of the venue. It's small, intimate, filled with stickers all over the walls, and even has a pool table. The stage is a decent size for a small venue. If you're from Cleveland, it's like Now That's Class, but more close to the size of Grog Shop. You can feel that great metal, punk, hardcore, and rock shows come out from here. I only gave s 4 because I didn't get the real experience, since their wasn't going on and wasn't going to be able to see a show while I...
