So I was driving down S. Lamar to see some live music, looking for a place to grab some Mexican food. Out of the corner of my eye I see a fairly plain looking building but with quite a few cars in the parking lot. With that being a good sign, I decided to stop in.
Sandy was the sole floor employee, deftly managing about five tables. I mentioned I was a first-timer. She dropped off a menu, chips and salsa, saying simply "You'll love our award-winning salsa". As I perused the menu I took my first bite of the chips/salsa, and was immediately impressed. The chips were hot, fresh and crisp, while the salsa was a perfect blend of short-lived heat and spice; some of the best salsa I've ever had.
I ordered the 1816 margarita (1816 is their street address :-) consisting of a very simple blend of 1800 Reposado tequila, lime juice and Grand Marnier. Absolutely fantastic.
Being a fan of chicken enchiladas verdes with a green tomatillo sauce, I noticed a similar enchilada with a "pipian sauce" made from pumpkin seeds. Out of curiosity I asked Sandy for a taste and she brought some out in a salsa cup. Very good and like nothing I've had before. It also went very well with the chips.
I ordered the chicken enchiladas with pipian sauce, refried beans and rice. Like everything else, it was terrific. The enchiladas were delish, the beans were perfect and the rice was fresh and moist.
And then.... there was flan. Yum.
Sometimes you just accidentally make the right turn at the right time and find a hidden gem while making a new friend. I'm usually stuck in the Tex-Mex rut (tasty but still a rut) and it was nice to have something more traditional and interior-Mexico. HIGHLY recommended. See you...
Read moreI have been enjoying this place for years. Everything on their menu is amazing and they have the best flautas that I have ever had and I grew up in San Antonio so I have had them from many places.
I decided to check out their patio last night for Cinco De Mayo. It was my first meal out since quarantine began. I was a little nervous to go out in public but once I sat down and saw the way they were running the restaurant I felt very reassured. They went above and beyond to make sure they were being safe and the food and drinks were amazing like always.
If you are on the fence about returning to eat out I would recommend Sazon as one of the best choices in Austin for authentic Mexican cuisine and great drinks all in a safe...
Read moreFresh, authentic Mexican food. We tried this great restaurant last evening and will definitely return. It was not your original Tex-Mex cuisine. The dishes they present on their menu is a sampling of different foods from the many places in Mexico. My husband had the tacos El Pastor and believed that they were the best he had ever had. I had a traditional Mexican dish called Chiles en Nogada, it was amazing. They have their full menu on line, if anyone is interested in trying this great place. The only thing that is tricky is the parking, but after 6pm you can park in the parking lot of the window tint place next door. They have a nice patio area and a decent happy hour, but happy hour is...
