The Golden Goose — Restaurant in Austin

My friend and I visited Golden Goose on Tuesday, December 12th around 1 am. We ordered two well margaritas, but unfortunately, we encountered some issues with the bartender's attitude. The bartender seemed tired and irritated throughout our interaction. We sat on the couches adjacent to the bar and enjoyed our drinks. After finishing our first round of drinks, which we had already paid for, we decided to order a second round consisting of a shot of tequila and a Tecate beer.

When I approached the bar to order the second round, I unintentionally stood at a spot that the bartender asked me not to occupy. In response, the bartender placed a divider and got uncomfortably close to me. I apologized and explained that there was no other available space at the bar. Despite this, I proceeded to place my order and pay for it. However, at that moment, the bartender pointed at my friend and claimed that he was asleep, stating that she could not serve us. In reality, my friend was simply lounging on the couch, looking down at his phone, which may have given the impression that his eyes were shut.

The bartender's approach in asking us to leave was aggressive, and she escorted us out as if we had been uncooperative or confrontational. It was disappointing that she did not inquire about my friend's well-being or attempt to confirm whether he was actually sleeping. It is worth mentioning that my friend, who owns several businesses and bars, is well-versed in the rules and regulations set by the TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission). The way we were treated during this incident was unsatisfactory, as the bartender made assumptions about my friend's state and still charged us for the drinks. Furthermore, she initially provided a refund but later charged me again at the end...

Unfortunately this has to be said. My girlfriend and I spend NYE there. When I went up to the bar multiple times I was completely ignored by two of the ladies. One older woman with glasses and the other one was the one that didn't have all the tattoos. The one that had all the tattoos was one of the best bartenders I have had at a bar in a long time. So the owner should know that. Now, I cannot say for certain that these other ladies were treating me differently because my color, but being a man of color growing up in this body knows what that looks like and can see it all over people's faces. These two ladies multiple times purposely did not look at me to serve me. My girlfriend is white so I had her go up there on the last drink because she was furious!!! It was so bad the people we had just met kept asking her where I was because it was taking me so long to get served. Needless to say the girls were super eager to serve my girlfriend. We spent a total of at least 220 dollars at that bar. I will not be going back for a long time until they can get the staff under control. Austin needs to take better pride in SERVICE. I have lived here for 20 plus years and I'll just say the scene is...

Fantastic, fun, cozy bar (with some food offerings as well). Staff are always super nice. It's a small spot with both inside and outside seating and they have a really cool shuffle-board game. You can chill-out and close your eyes for 10 seconds or so without getting immediately screamed at like some other bars nearby.

Also, unlike some other bars in the area, the staff isn't constantly pushing 400 rules down your throat, or sharpening axes to grind, or taking out their personal problems on their customers. You treat people with respect and kindness at the Golden Goose, and you'll be treated with respect and kindness in turn. One of the best little bars in Austin. Def recommend you check it out for yourself.
