My partner and I have been trying all of our local coffee places for variety, but this was our first experience with Sorrento's. Needless to say, we won't be adding this to our list for repeats.
If you're someone like me who reads reviews, allow me to expound on why...
Firstly, the employees were super sweet, efficient, and helpful. They are the ones that deserve the stars.
The coffee, however, is some of the worst that I've ever had - and this is coming from someone who spent a month drinking instant coffee while trekking through the mountains.
I'm not a fan of overly sweet things, but thought I was safe ordering a dirty chai. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've never had a chai that was too sweet for me to drink. Until now. Even with the addition of TWO espresso shots, all I could taste was this sickly sweet, very un-chai-like monstrosity that was closer to licking a gingerbread Glade plugin than to anything remotely like an aromatic tea & spice blend. Gross isn't a strong enough word - this was disgusting. straight to the trash
My partner ordered a half sweet, four shot mocha - something I like as well. After tasting his I almost laughed. It was gritty from the cheap, instant hot chocolate powder they likely use and tasted like the burnt leftovers from the gas station coffee pot left on the warmer all day. It was nearly comical how bad it was.
Normally, I would try other types of coffee and try to see if maybe it was just that particular option I didn't like... but no. Not this time. This wasn't a one-off, this is just their offerings. And now I am absolutely flummoxed at their high Google review ratings - this is why I have...
Read moreThis was going to be a 1 star review. It's now a 4 star. Upon hearing of my incident, the owner, Mary Jane (a former teacher) emailed me, spoke to the employee and offered a sincere apology for my experience at her cafe. Things happen. It's how an establishment deals with and learns from a mishap that matters. Happy to say I will be returning to Sorrento's :)
This was my review: I believe in spending local which is why I frequent Sorrento's instead of Starbucks. That was before today. I pulled up and there was a car at the drive-thru. Since I know having my car running idle in 100 degree weather is bad for the environment, I pulled in and hopped over to the walk-up window, placed my order and proceeded to watch a car that pulled up after I placed my order have their order put before mine. The late-comers were served two drinks (one hot and one cold) and a snack then on their way before my drink was started. Since the attendant already had my CC, I didn't walk away. She then presents me with my chai coconut milk hot, but screws up and makes it on ice??? Redoes my drink order and gives me a large, I asked for and was charged for an extra large. I didn't say anything. I just took the drink and made a mental note my daily caffeine refuels will now be...
Read moreThis is an amazing little coffee shack with a drive thru and walk up window. There are several different food and drink options at fair prices and everything I've had has been really good, honestly one of my favorite coffee shops in Austin. Their blended drinks are amazing, my favorite are the vanilla espressocino and the jumping monkey. Their frozen Italian sodas are also very refreshing. The kolaches are soo delicious (even better than kolache-specific places) and even coming later in the day they always seem to still have the egg and cheese (my favorite) available. I am always happy to get a cinnamon roll here too - note - it is a drier version with granulated sugar and cinnamon on top, no icing, not soggy, just how I like it. It keeps in my car very well for a few days in the plastic wrap and I can snack on it while driving. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, and the line does not take too long. My only regret is I wish I had found this place sooner instead of barely last year, I...
