Cute little place, seems to be a local owned and run business. The beef patties are exactly what i needed them to be, not overly spicy (looking at you goldenkrust with a giant scotch bonnet left in whole) and not overly salty. We went around noon and it was about a 15 minute wait to get 2 patties, so don't expect to be in and out quickly during busy times. Cute seating area and don't squish the bread. Coming back for the goat, I love kijan nou fe sos viand cabrit and other goat dishes so curry goat with rice and peas has me in a lock. Can't wait to try this place again. Edit: have been back twice in 2023 and about to be my second time in 2024. I have only two issues with this place and one is the service time.. it is SLOW. They will wait on one customer so take the order, make the order, bring it out and take payment on that one customer. Instead of taking multiple orders or seeing if anyone in line is a "quick" customer buying ready to go items. So maybe an extra staff member at the register would help? My other issue is the lack of advance ordering/internet ordering which again perhaps adding a part time worker could address- and honestly I'd build the online site for free just because I like this places food that much Hopefully with time they will be able to hire more help and expand the menu a bit more. Additionally maybe consider selling bowls or rice and peas by the container or pound, I know I'd stop in for a take out rice at least twice a week. Anyways the food is good, small and simple but adequate seating area. Wheelchair friendly entrance with a very long ramp space to turn a power chair around and park to eat too, movable chairs at the small tables for easy access(the door may be a problem i would suggest calling when you are in the lot if you need help with the door handle) I love the beef patties even liked the veggie one and I'm not big on yellow curry. Absolutely worth the asking price. Oh and I'd buy those uncooked, frozen, by the dozen too if...
Read moreI came to Islands Choice on September 19th around 5:45 PM and ordered a red snapper with extra onions, white rice, and oxtails gravy. We sat inside and received our food around 6:00 PM. To my disappointment, the snapper came out completely cold — not “cooled off,” but as if it had been sitting out all day. There was no steam, no heat, just lukewarm fish.
I immediately brought this to the staff’s attention within minutes of sitting down. I even asked another customer to feel the food, and they agreed it was cold. Instead of acknowledging the issue, the lady at the counter refused to touch the plate to check, and her solution was to simply put the fish in the microwave. That is not acceptable. Red snapper is an expensive, fresh dish — I ordered it expecting it to be cooked to order, not reheated like leftovers.
When I asked for my money back, I was told I couldn’t get a refund, nor could I order anything different. My only option, according to her, was to accept the same cold fish reheated in a microwave. I paid cash for this meal, and to be told I can’t get a refund or a proper replacement is unfair and unprofessional.
Nobody pays hard-earned money for cold fish. When customers order fresh seafood, it should come out hot and properly cooked — not cold and microwaved. This experience left me feeling disrespected and cheated. For the prices charged, customers deserve better quality food and better...
Read moreI was feeling for some good Caribbean soup, search and found Islands Choice in Avon Park. Order a Large Chicken soup, paid $7.50.. At first glance, the color seems pale white, a little slimy like it came from a Soup can, with some added Boil chicken wings with a few pieces of roll up dumplings. Wow, I am surprised of the fairly good reviews. Highlands county being such a small-town vs. larger counties. I know your restaurant choices are limited and you have to settle for less. I like to support small business and I don't like leaving negative reviews, but this was an embarrassment to Jamaican food (soup). Where are the carrots, the yam, potatoes, green banana, corn, pumpkins, peas, chocho, vegetable, flesh thyme, the rich flavor, etc. all the good ingredients and flavor you found in a food authentic Jamaican soup dish.?! I didn't buy any other dish, so can't attest to the other dishes. I only hope the owner/chef will take the time out to review these feedbacks and make some positive proactive changes. Islands Choice, You...
