Dewar's Candy Shop — Restaurant in Bakersfield

The ice cream itself is good just like any other dewars location. Although this is the worst location I have ever been to. I been coming to dewars since I was a child and NEVER felt this way. As soon as me and my friend walked in immidatley we were given the most judgmental stares ever. Not only by the customers but also the workers. My friend and I were very confused bc it wasn’t like we were dressed in a way that would cause attention or anything of the sort. We stared back and everyone just turned around it was super odd. One of the customers looked at me with disgust and then started giggling when I turned my back. The workers literally stared us down until we walked out the place. Then when ordering the guy was passive aggressive. A simple question like “do you guys have a menu” made him kinda sigh it was almost as if he wanted us to hurry up (mind you we aren’t taking long like at all plus there is NOBODY behind us). The whole entire experience was very overwhelming we couldn’t even enjoy sitting down and eating because everyone was staring at us like we were doing something wrong I kept asking my friend if he felt the same and he agreed. Not one person in this place looked like “us” and because of that we were receiving uncomfortable and unwelcoming amounts of stare downs. Oh, super nice, friendly and sweet staff working Saturday morning, 11/4/23. Thank you so much for making my day on Saturday! I came straight from the airport with my suitcase and my backpack, looking hot, tired and probably a little dehydrated after a 2-day desert training up North in Ridgecrest, and I had to turn my rental car back in at the Bakersfield airport.

But my plane wasn’t leaving for 4 more hours. I did not want to spend it there waiting.

So I asked one of the TSO lady officers where would you go eat in Bakersfield if you only had a “few hours”?

The nice lady said “You need to have a yummy shake at Dewars on Calloway”. So we looked at my phone to see how far away it was, and I ordered a Lyft -with my bags down to your location.

Walked in to a beautiful pink and gold decorated sweet shop and felt like I was going to have an amazing shake!

I ordered the George’s special, vanilla ice cream, banana and walnuts blended up! It was perfect! It truly was breakfast, lunch and dinner for me and I was full the rest of the day.

I bought one of the “ chews” plush toy to give to the TSO agent at the airport for her kindness in pointing me to such a happy place. If you have visited Dewar's you know that the ice cream is excellent and the toppings rich. Service is always good so no need to ponder a visit, just go.

If you've never been, don't delay. Dewar's is a treat any day but on a hot day it's a must stop. The menu has plenty of options but very straightforward. Over the years I have tried almost everything, on our most recent visit my husband had the large sundae while I had the small. You can definitely share a small sundae, potions are generous so keep that on mindcwhen ordering.

All ice cream flavors are rich, also something to be mindful of when ordering your toppings. I enjoy rich flavors, but if you order toppings that are overly sweet it can make your tich ice cream sickly sweet which I don't like. A nice surprise is the marshmallow topping, Dewar's doesn't offer whipped cream, so it's either the marshmallow topping or nothing. You'll be pleased with the marshmallow ad it is fluffy and not overly sweet, and doesn't melt like whipped cream, it's a great add-on to any ice cream order. Speaking of melting. Dewar's ice cream has staying power, it stays pretty firm while you work on it, this is also important, especially if you order a banana split or something similar.
