I've eaten at other revolving sushi places in LA and also a few in tokyo. Decided to check kura in balersfield out to check the quality of the fish.
First the food. I had my usual plates which were salmon, shrimp, eel, crab, sea urchin, and tuna. The fish looked decent, but still lacking in taste. My tuna for example were tough to chew because it still had some sinew. The only things I liked were the eel and crab. I think if they chose better cuts for the fish, then you'll get a more consistent experience instead of chewing something for hours.
Next is service. I thought service was fine at the start, but then someone asked if we had Wasabi and told us they'll be back but they never came back. By the time they came by again they asked again if we had wasabi, and then they finally brought the wasabi. It was too late since we were done eating. I understand if the restaurant is busy, but it's ridiculous to be asked twice for wasabi and to get it when you're done eating. Also had like 5 waiters come by which made me feel anxious and didn't help with the dining experience.
The cost was eh. I understand it's bakersfield and it's not near the ocean, but good luck getting full off of 5 plates. You need to eat at least 10 to be full and it costs $38. Not to mention anything extra you want to get. Ramen for some reason was $10+. Small bites start at $4+. My bill came to $50 for 9 plates + 2 drinks and a miso soup which was $4.60 for some reason. And this wasn't great quality either. I could get better tasting instant miso soup at vons or make it myself and it would be less than $2. Ramen was also on the smaller side and the taste was mediocre which didn't justify it's cost.
Finally the atmosphere. Get ready to hear "IRASSHAIMASE" every time a customer walks in. You'll get to enjoy hearing all the staff say it in unison. The sound and the annoying music from the robot waiter will make you want to leave ASAP. I'm here to enjoy a relaxing atmosphere, not get bombarded with noise bombs. It felt as though they wanted me to eat quickly and get out. The kura sushi in japan wasn't this loud and I was able to hear myself talk.
Overall, if this is your first experience at a revolving sushi restaurant and you've never had more exotic fish, then you'll love it here only if you're used to a loud atmosphere. Otherwise, if you've eaten at comparable restaurants, take your money somewhere else like ahi sushi...
Read moreFirst things first I went here with a friend during a “soft opening” ( an opening that is done a few days before a grand opening and has less advertising on purpose it is designed to give the staff a few days time to learn how to work together in a real time setting after training without major pressure of a huge first day. The staff were super friendly and greeted each guest with an authentic Japanese greeting. The restaurant was spotlessly clean and moving along like a charm which would be expected of a first day. The host seats us and in a quick moment the waiter arrives to explain to any first time guests how the conveyor belt and plate system works. All in total my friend and I had 30 plates of assorted sushi, miso soup, drinks and a wonderful time. They even have a friendly robot that moves around the restaurant delivering drinks to the guests. All the sushi is on covered plates and marked with pictures and a label. The conveyor belt quietly moves around the whole restaurant and passes by each table. You simply grab the plates you want and enjoy. When you finish a plate you simply slide the empty plate down a chute by the table and it gets automatically counted and added to your bill. If you want something specific they have a tablet that you can easily order any food or drinks from and wait for your order to come from a second conveyor belt that runs above and is set aside for individual orders. After each set of five plates you see an animation come on the tablet screen that gives you more information on various items ect. After 15 plates a little prize ball automatically runs down a chute to your table and you receive a small souvenir that is featured for free. Since we went through thirty plates we received a second souvenir. Each dish was cut plated and garnished to perfection and everything tasted fresh. My only regret was not having a second stomach. The staff was prompt to answer any questions and they paid attention to refills in a timely manner. The tablets are versatile because you can order any drinks, foods, deserts and refills. You can even ping your server and pay from them very easily. I look forward to going again in another month or so to see how the staff has settled in...

My friend and I went on opening day, Nov 1st. It was a soft opening, but there was quite a line. Our wait time was 2 hours, so I recommend planning ahead or calling about reservations if it's on a super busy day. We signed on the wait list, and chilled back home until they texted us that we were next to check in.
First of all, the staff: they were the utmost sweetest and most accommodating people ever. Greeted us at the door, checked us in when it was our time, and immediately walked us to our seats. Since this was our first time at Kura Sushi, one of the staff gave us the run down on how to take out the tiny plates from the trays (aka Mr. Fresh) on the conveyor belt, plus how to use the monitor, and other things. Made the experience super smooth and so much fun without having to fumble around like a newborn chick, and constantly asking for help. Thank you for that!
(Our singing robot server buddy was adorable too, so they get an honorable mention. Robot server's name is apparently Codi! So cute!)
Now onto the fooooood! Oh my gosh, everything was so fresh and beautifully presented. Some were so pretty, it was almost a shame to eat (almost). I have to say, the eel was the star of the show for me. I never had it before, and was shocked how it melts in your mouth with a burst of smokey flavor! 10/10 would recommend! I would've taken more photos to post, but.......ya girl was hungry and the food was too tasty, so sorry, not sorry.
My friend and I both got to try seafood we've never had before that night, and it was fun. A few hiccups on our end (I don't think sea urchin is for me lol), but we still had a blast and it made for some funny, memorable moments for us.
Quick word of advice: definitely come with a big appetite, cus my friend and I could barely make it to 15 plates to get the prize before we had to tap out!
The prize was a red Pikmin keychain btw.
I loved everything about my experience at Kura Sushi, and I'm absolutely coming back with my friends again!...
