What a delightful experience we had at this cozy throwback cafe. Without having a reservation, which is only available for parties of 4 and 6, we showed up at 5:45 pm to discover all of the tables in the main dining room were full. We decided to wait and we were told it could be an hour. Not discouraged we stood at this tiny bar table that was no bigger than a large dinner plate. I went to the bar and ordered drinks., Although I could not get a tequila gimlet because they did not have limes, I ordered two negronis that were excellent. The hostess came up to us and asked if we wanted some starters. We ordered the sourdough with Normandy butter. Wow, whoever is responsible for making this bread deserves their own bakery . Fantastic taste and texture. Best I ever tasted! The butter served with the bread is pure decadence. If they served us nothing else I could have ordered 3 more servings and been happy . As our table was not going to be ready for a while, the hostess asked if we wanted more items. At this point I was prepared to stand for the remainder of the evening. Instead we were offered one stool at the bar, my partner sat while I stood. We ordered the chicken pate , together with a $43.00 bottle of French bordeaux wine. The pate had such great flavor which went perfectly with the Atwater crispy crackers.. We watched the kitchen work its magic . Chef Will is very meticulous in the way he plates his food. Very mild mannered with no barking at staff to pick up orders. When we finished the pate, we were then escorted to our table which was situated next to a bank of wine bottles neatly assembled on shelves. At this point we still had a watercress salad and entrees to enjoy. The watercress salad was well prepared, dressed with fresh horseradish and crème fraîche.i could only finish a portion of my prime rib served atop a large piece of sourdough and topped with horseradish. My partner got the vegan dish with chick peas which was outstanding. Somehow we could not pass up dessert- the pot du crème. This restaurant has a lot of charm and ambiance ! A great...
Read moreStunning little nook of a restaurant. Baltimore continues to excel with friendly, elevated "boutique-casual" spaces with truly knock-out food. Dimly lit and cozy with limited seating, so make sure to make a reservation (though there are small pedestals available for drinks and noshing while you wait.) Everything from service to food offerings was friendly and unfussy - French without the frou-frou. Cocktails (Martini, and a soda spritzed "The Weekender") were great, but they also specialize in natural wines, too. Fresh sourdough and butter from Normandy? Godly. Terrine (yes, terrine) on fresh bread crackers? Ascended. We didn't have it but I'm sure the chicken liver pate would have hit the same. We also had their take on a Ceaser Salad with chicory, and a main stewed/braised beef "Peposo" which were also pitch-perfect. Portions are larger than true small plates but not massive, great for sharing. Easily a top choice, for either light meal or something broader. The host also mentioned to us that come spring they will have their patio open with live music, which sounds great to...
Read moreIt saddens me to write this review as we had been looking forward to dining here all summer. We came to Baltimore for the first time to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and carefully selected Comptoir du Vin for our special night. The space was beautiful and we couldn't wait to try the duck that had been advertised on Instagram. After our server greeted us, she informed us that they were out of the duck. Huge bummer and started things off on a bad note. Not once throughout the night was our anniversary acknowledged and while friendly, we felt ignored by our server throughout the night. The little gem salad and pork neck were excellent and we were so looking forward to the raspberry cobbler to end the meal. 5 minutes after ordering it, our server comes over and lets us know that they were out of cobbler for the night. Ugh. We left feeling disappointed and underwhelmed by the whole experience. A sad experience to end our otherwise great trip...
