An authentic Izakaya. You must try the Kaki Fry! Good sized portions. Affordable. But the Ramen was, although made with decent ingredients, disappointing in terms of soup flavor and small noodle portion. Even that is not normal in Honshu where the owner comes from. They've got all the expected standards and are decently done. Service was barely adequate, but they got the job done. Sushi was quite good but the rice was under par and too large. Somewhat amateurish. Well, it is not a top sushi joint after all. It is an Izakaya in it's truest form, imperfections and all! Although filled with an interesting but disconnected collection of Japanese travel memorabilia, the mood is somewhat somber and the owner barely communicates unless prodded. I suppose it's good that he concentrate on the Sushi, but the 'front of the house' mood is somewhat lackluster. It feels like he's been doing it for 40-50 years, which is...
Read moreI very rarely write reviews. But I have to for this place because it is phenomenally good for the price. Where else in Portland are you going to get good Japanese food, prepared in the traditional style? Nowhere, I believe me, I've tried! The bento is a great deal. If you're very hungry, it'll only make one meal, but usually I can have enough leftover for a good snack later. The owner is the only good waitress I've had, but she probably hires friends who don't have the experience that many other waitresses have in other restaurants. The bento price went from last year, now I think it's $13-14. You get at least 3 traditional side dishes, an entree, 2 other med sized sides, and rice. That's seven things, not mentioning the miso and tea! It is the best traditional Japanese food in the Northwest. Sushi PDX has great deals on sushi rolls. This place is getting a bit pricier for the sashimi....
Read moreI can't believe it took me so long to write a review about my favorite Japanese restaurant. Don't let the simple & humble look from the outside fool you. The inside of this restaurant is filled with genuine Japanese figurines & trinkets. This restaurant has a very comfortable & relaxing atmosphere that just lets you de-stress and marvel at the plethora of Japanese decorations. Being that this Japanese restaurant have a family restaurant style each of the staff provide excellent customer service; the genuine welcoming smile not fake from beginning to end. In my personal opinion, the food is great and my two personal favorite is their Chicken Ramen and Mixed Tempura Donburi. Overall, both me and my boyfriend have always been satisfied & happy with the quality of food & customer service and we always come here to celebrate small &...
