I've always liked Oldwest - as I've been to most of their locations throughout the metroplex. My first experiences with them was with their 2nd restaurant in the Denton off of US 77 and Teasly area while I was in grad school. I've been of course to their newer location right off of I35E, but I'm just sharing that for years, I've been a big fan of Oldwest!
This particular (Bedford) location's food is great, and the quality of service is overall nice. However, they need a new greeter at the door. Two different times within the past 3 weeks, I've had leary moments with this individual (a female server with long dark hair in like a ponytail like style).
My first time experiencing her was when I came into the restaurant, and the 1st thing out of her mouth 'jokingly' was,
"He's coming to get you...."
My response was
"What?", but she replied,
"Looks like he's coming to get you".
Once she said that, she pointed to the outside window on the far right of the room to show me a local policeman getting off his motorcycle after parking to possibly come inside.
My response was "No he's not!".
I took that to be very offensive and insensitive. I'm a young black man in my early 40s. Even though I don't have a general negative view of our street and city law enforcements, I don't want to be stigmatized nor playfully looked at as some sort of entertainment with police. And if you haven't been living under a rock lately, you know we're still distant from healing "race relations" in our society.
I came to eat lunch. Not to be joked at in that manner. Nor was I really given a welcome....
After she grinned and chucked at my response, she replied "Just kidding..." But that was no joke!
My 2nd time experiencing her was me coming by later in the afternoon on this particular day and it being maybe 20-15 mins before closing time. Her look at me before seating me was as if I should have came earlier to get serviced. I don't practice doing the such (coming to a restaurant before closing with a sense of entitlement), but for you to be an establishment, you should welcome anybody within your hours of service openly and friendly. I wasn't trying to take advantage, but I'm grateful that my waitress and the cooks in the back provided a great meal.
These are my experiences with that greeter. Yall give her some training or...
Read moreWe have been coming to OW since they opened at this location and today was the first time I've been disappointed. The service was not good and it wasn't crowded. She had two tables and though she was new, she didn't even refill drinks. The food was warm-ish and the bacon and sausage cool to the touch. Not sure if that was the server's issue or the kitchen management. The prices have gone up on everything as they have in most places, however, a side of bacon is now a single strip. So, $4.00 for two strips of bacon after paying $15.99 for an omelet. I agreed to pay those prices because as I mentioned, OW rarely disappoints but today the meat was cold, the omelet warm, and service sub par. The waitress asked about the bacon and if I wanted it crispy. I said I did. All the bacon that arrived at our table was tough, chewy and not crispy. It tasted old. My sister's food was cold, just cool. We all work hard for our money and just want to feel like we are receiving the quality we pay for. This experience ends a long relationship with Old West for me. I do want to mention the manager came over and offered to bring my sister new fried potatoes. She had already mixed them in with eggs and said it was fine. She mentioned the cold food to the waitress when she asked how things were but mostly to alert her to a possible issue in the kitchen. It would have gone a long way, if the manager had offered a discount or to omit the fried potatoes from the bill. He seemed more annoyed with our feedback than the issue at hand. He even argued that the potatoes were made fresh today though we had made no suggestion that they weren't. A final thing was a $1.86 credit card fee. This wasn't mentioned. I had cash and would have paid cash had I known. I was using my Discover for the 5% back on resteraunts. I feel like they need to mention that so I can make an educated decision. While occasionally, you hit a bad service, this experience was cemented in my mind by the tone of the management and continued lack of service after...
Read moreAs someone who values good service and satisfying meals, I entered Old West Cafe on a busy Saturday morning with high hopes. However, the experience quickly devolved into a sensory overload nightmare. The deafening noise level, lacking any sound dampening measures, made conversation nearly impossible without shouting. Steer clear if you're sensitive to loud environments.
The restaurant's decor, straight out of Hobby Lobby, features generic western-themed decorations covering every inch of the walls. While some might find this charming, I found it over-the-top and inauthentic.
The single-sheet menu haphazardly lists entrees and sides on opposite sides, making deciphering a challenge. Despite being May 4th, the Christmas holiday menu, taunting with unavailable items, was still displayed. The old west and cowboy-referenced dish names confused more than they clevered.
I ordered the Cattle Driver, an eggs Benedict with grilled tomato, and a side of fried potatoes. The potatoes were decently seasoned, but the eggs were so bland that I repeatedly reached for the salt and pepper shakers. At $14.99, I expected more flavor for the price. If you're seeking a spot to bring your dietary-restricted grandparents preferring tasteless food, this might be it.
Adding insult to injury, the service was subpar. We had to ask for silverware after our food arrived, and the staff failed to split the bill correctly when it came time to pay, causing unnecessary confusion and delays.
In summary, Old West Cafe disappointed on all fronts. The sensory overload, kitschy decor, confusing menu, bland food, and poor service left me feeling like I had wasted my time and money. As someone valuing a good dining experience, I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone, except perhaps those with dietary restrictions not minding mediocre food and lackluster service. Save yourself the trouble and seek better options...
