It IS a pain and an inconvenience that they don't take cards, especially for students who don't have a bank here and have to pay high ATM fees...but it's worth it once in a while if you're far from home and the Chinese you're used to back home.
They're not bad. I like the employees, the kids working there are cute and I always tip them. If you ask nicely, you can get your chicken "extra spicy!" It doesn't come out super spicy because they're catering to Midwestern palates, but it at least has good flavor when you ask for this. If you find it a little bland, this is why...just ask for it spicy. :)
I prefer the Sesame Chicken or Orange Chicken extra spicy. I NEVER get cream cheese wontons because they run the risk of being solid in the middle and not super good. But I ALWAYS get the crab cheese wontons! I'm sure it's imitation crab or something but the flavor of these is better than the other wontons. Sweet, warm, and always delicious. Their potstickers/dumplings are also delicious, and their egg rolls are great.
I would steer clear of their brown or fried rice, because it comes out mushy sometimes. Just go with white rice usually. I enjoy their lo mein as well.
This is Minnesota, so don't expect absolutely amazing Chinese food. These guys are catering to Midwestern palates. People around here don't season food as much as other places, and spicy and super flavorful foods can be too much for many Midwesterners to handle. Just stick with the basics, remember where you are, and remember to ask for your chicken...
Read moreFirst time I went to this place I got takeout. When I got home the General Tso’s chicken I received wasn’t anything edible. It was the grease and charred pieces of different meats of what I suspect to be taken from the bowl or trash container where they put the burnt remains of what they scrape from the grill but can’t bring themselves to throw out… over white rice. My parent got sweet and sour chicken that was so filled with grease that in order to eat them they had to squeeze the oil out.
Giving them the benefit of a new try a year later where possibly they had a bad or good cook that was having a stressful day last year and wanted to take it out on their customers, I decided I really was hungry for Chinese so I went back. It looked ok and was nice and hot however it tasted like the chicken was marinated in ridiculously strong fish juice. It smelled like dead fish left out all day in the...
Read moreGreat food... HUGE portions, delicious taste, great prices. New China has never screwed up any of our orders. After their initial re-opening preparation times seemed a bit long, but the last several times I've been there they've seemed to have more staff and times were much less (around 10 minutes when I called in).
I finally made it through all/most of the chicken dishes... Kung Po is my favorite. Hot N Spicy is good if you need your sinuses cleared out... like Sweet N Sour on steroids. Szechuan was also pretty good, but didn't have the flavor medley of Kung Po as less vegetables. Didn't care for Hunan chicken (just broccoli). Generals and Orange chicken both very good and quite similar in taste, but I prefer the non-breaded chicken in the Kung Po chicken.
Friendly staff. No credit/debit cards accepted, but worth the slight hassle for the perks...
