This shop is just a couple of blocks from my new place, so I was excited to try it on my walk back from the store today. I waited a minute for someone to come out of the back, which wouldnāt normally be an issue, but it was so hot inside that it felt like a lifetime and I considered walking out because I was getting heat sick quickly. But when she did come out, I sampled the chocolate hazelnut gelato, and it was really good. I quickly decided on an affogato, but when I noticed she was making it in a metal cup, I let her know that I wanted it to go. She said, ā oh we donāt do affogatos to go,ā which surprised me, because Iāve had an affogatos to go from almost every gelato shop in the Bay Area! I told her that I couldnāt stay because I had a load of laundry finishing in 2 minutes (in a shared laundry room with broken machines so itās REALLY shitty to take them over and be late.) Iāve also had bariatric surgery and canāt always finish things quickly, so I never ever get drinks NOT āto go.ā She scrambled for a container to put it in and acted kind of put out about it. If thatās your policy, you really should be checking with people when they order!
Unfortunately, it was a FANTASTIC affogato. I say unfortunately, because I canāt imagine Iād ever come back and drink this inside because it was so uncomfortable (both the temperature inside and the kind of crappy attitude from the employee) and because my specific dietary situation doesnāt always allow me to finish things. I hope you consider changing...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWhat a lovely place. We were in Berkeley for a casual lunch on Shattuck Ave and walked by this place. It looked so cute and cozy that we had to go in. Plus it said Italian gelato, are you kidding me? You can't simple walk by, pass it and not stop.
Very casual and warm atmosphere inside, love the way it's done up. Few seats at a large community table and few tables outside as well.
Organic milk and great vegan options too. Few great gelato options, sorbets and coffee with great quality here!
I love me some pistachio gelato that is not easy to find but this place nailed it. I opted for the cone which was freshly made, crunchy and delicious. Hubby loved his afogato and we had a great time speaking in Italian to the owners.
Well located on a busy street like Shattuck and so close to the BART, makes this place ideal spot for that gelato on a hot day! They also have few table games for entertainment :)
Gender neutral bathrooms and super...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe always stop by whenever we're in town to get the chocolate & pistachio flavors. They're usually pretty busy but because of the atmospheric river rain, it was fairly quiet. This time hojicha was on the menu & it did not disappoint.
Update: Visited again over the new year holiday & even though it closed early due to short staffing, the owner was so accommodating in opening up so we could get some gelato for a big family dinner.
Bonus: owner threw in a small container of hojicha (which coincidentally is one of my faves) that they source out to local restaurants, so I left feeling very...
