Five on Black — Restaurant in Billings

I'll start off by saying that a few months ago, when the place opened, Five On Black delivered free food to my place of work, a local business. I loved them and knew I had to go back. Upon entering, you're greeted with loud music and a sign that proclaims they like it that way (and also that everything is fresh and gluten-free). The worker could sense that it was our first time and, thanks to his guidance and the minimalist, large menu, we were able to decide on our large bowls. This was a big mistake. The smalls are more than generous and the larges are enough for two meals if you're not completely ravenous. Of course, you wouldn't know that by the price. They ask if you would like a cheese bun and it really shouldn't be a question, these things are amazing. My fiancé, who had never tasted Five on Black before, stopped me before we left and insisted we buy a dozen (which is actually a baker's dozen). They even have a box where you can register to vote! We knew very quickly we would not be able to finish in the store and the nice employee offered us some lids, and even gave my fiancé a free sample of the spicy coconut sauce. My husband and I just tried Five on Black for the first time today for lunch. We ordered through Door Dash as we couldn't find a delivery option on their website, but according to a card in our bag, they offer delivery through their website in addition to takeout. I had the chicken bowl with white rice, sweet potatoes, and spicy chimichurri. My chicken was a bit dry, but the rice and sweet potatoes were very flavorful. I love spicy and I love chimichurri, so this was perfect for me, but it is quite a bit spicier than your average chimichurri. My husband had the steak bowl with brown rice, greens, sweet potatoes, spicy chimichurri, and mango BBQ. His steak was extremely dry, but everything else was good (the sauce was too spicy for him). The portions were huge and I have half of mine saved for later. The prices were reasonable, and even more so if I could have figured out how to order through their website (about $10 per bowl versus $14 as a base price). As another reviewer said, it felt very healthy while still being tasty. If the proteins hadn't been so dry, it would have definitely been a 5 star for us. We'll be in Billings for the next 4 weeks, so I definitely expect we'll try it again during our time...

First time customer, we are driving through. We’ve been on the road for a few weeks now and fast food is getting real old, but we also don’t want to waste precious time in a sit down restaurant. This caught my eye for some fresh food and it surprised my expectations. This small chain could be the next Chipotle’s. I truely hope they expand. Employees were young and looked like they all worked well as a team with confidence, and some fun dancing moves while working together. Vibes were great, my three year old was loving it.
