The owners will probably hate me for this review just because I'm about to compare Freddy's to Steak & Shake. It's easily the closest analogue though.
Because Freddy's and S&S mimic the same aesthetic, they appear very similar, and much like S&S, the primary attractions here are steakburgers, fries and milkshakes.
Freddy's boast a bit more in the ice cream/custard category, while S&S focuses on milkshakes almost exclusively for its dairy desserts.
The burgers and fries aspect of both businesses are nearly identical, however. In this way, there's nothing about Freddy's that sets itself apart from S&S. Their menu even lists the different burger offerings in a similar order.
For a place that models itself so closely after the steakburger joints of the past, I would've liked to see a slightly lower price point than Freddy's offers. Two combo meals and a milkshake ran us almost $30 (after tax), and dessert (after the shake) put us $2 over that figure. S&S, by comparison, offers the same for just over $20. At that price difference, I would expect the burgers to be a but better than S&S's, but to my faint disappointment, they were actually not as good, with too much charring around the edges for my taste. Your milage may vary on that note, however; if what you were looking for is a slightly crisper that S&S steakburger, you might just have come to the right place. In either case, I think the price for the quality is a bit of the high side.
I was also disappointed at the lake of coke products, vs Pepsi products, but this too is a matter of opinion. There are some things I think Dr. Pepper goes better with than coke; steakburger is not one of them.
There is no tangible difference between Freddy's fries and S&S's.
Freddy's eschews on-table ketchup and mustard for packets and a condiments counter. 50/50 on that. I don't care which anything given restaurant has, but I was expecting ketchup at my table, so for me it caused some extra footwork to get what I wanted.
If there's anywhere Freddy's stands out, it's in the dessert department. There are many more entertaining options than S&S's colorful, but ultimately same-y milkshake parade. Try the funnel cake & custard, when it's in season.
The restaurant is clean and the staff is very friendly. Overall, a very pleasant, tasty experience, and just what you need if you live in northern Delaware but have a desperate craving for S&S-style burgers. As a longtime fan of S&S, I think I still prefer my origins, but for those who have no idea what S&S is, the minor differences are unlikely to bug you (and they were mild disappointments at worst for me). Lovely little restaurant and I do...
Read more1st time at Freddy's. My wife and I in the mood for just a good burger. When we didn't see a single buyer platter, the nice cashier said, no problem you can order a single burger. What we would latter learn is each burger is NO thicker than a slice of cheese! I kid you not! Don't get me wrong, good tasting, but to charge $9.50 for a platter to include show string fries (literally the thickness of a shoe lace) is NOT for us again. Freddy knew all about keeping as much profit as possible but not how to keep the average customer. The employees were so nice and helpful......really. Unfortunately the inside food area to sit was not clean. Food on the floor, under quite a % of the tables and table counter tops were NOT cleaned. We would have sat outside at 2pm but the music and loud speaker to announce one's food was so, so loud there was no enjoying that type atmosphere. To be fair, employees are reduced due to costs or non-interest to work. However, there has to be a better balance of clean comfortable appearance, if the busy is going to have more people return to this business. Maybe just a fluke visit but upper management needs to visit their store(s) and do a much better job at the areas of improvement to enhance customer retention. If we lived in the area (driving through), we would never return, to many...
Read moreTried Freddys for the first time today and was excited based on its outside appearance. However, once inside I walked to the menu board and register, the cashier didn’t say anything. I stood there for three minutes and she started filling up random items like spoons and straws. When she was finally done she came back to take my order. I sat at a booth and waited for my number to be called. At first glance the establishment was not very crowded or full of patrons. But the tables and floors were disgusting. The trash was overflowing and the ice cream machines behind the register were visibly dirty. Once I tried the food it was a disappointment. If mid had a picture definition, Freddys food would be right next to it. I order the spicy chicken sandwich and fries, which was not spicy. The fries were very thin. It is personal preference, but they also were not seasoned. My boyfriend ordered the cheeseburger and it was smashed thin but the edges were burnt and overall lacked flavor. I ordered a fountain drink and tried the peppermint milkshake. The fountain drinks were all flat and the workers admitted that after we purchased our food. The milkshake was good but nothing special. Overall, I wouldn’t come back and would rather go to Burger King. Nothing here is worth the price and I just never had food that was so...
