Basically Halal — Restaurant in Bon Air

My partner and I stopped in for lunch on a Thursday because we saw an article in a local newspaper about the young partners who opened this place together. It's only been open since early July, 2023, and let me tell you - you don't want to sleep on this place! The food is fantastic!

We had the chicken shawarma platter and a mixed chicken and beef shawarma platter with a side of fries. We tried the halal, tahini, pom pom, and garlic sauces - all homemade and each one delicious in its own right!

The aromatic rice at the base of the platter was perfectly textured and delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful. The little bit of freshness added from the salad was extremely welcome against the richness of the sauces and meat. The shoestring fries were deliciously seasoned and perfectly crisp.

The staff was extra friendly, and while there was a little bit of a wait, we didn't mind at all. The food was fresh and served with a smile. The young men who own this place are getting their feet under them in terms of running a business, which I know they will iron out kinks and get it running smoothly. I would recommend ordering online to minimize wait time, but even if you walk in and order, I promise it is worth it. Seating is minimal based on the location, but we were able to use one of the three sit down tables inside. There are a couple more out front, but I wouldn't use them in any kind of bad weather. The staff seemed rushed and somewhat rude, which created a less than welcoming atmosphere for patrons.

Unfortunately, the quality of the food and service reflected this sentiment. The tsunami platter consisted largely of french fries and I cannot recommend it. On a positive note, the mixed platter was decent, and the burger was excellent!

We encountered a hiccup when requesting extra sauce. We intentionally placed a second drink order and asked for the sauce, hoping this would streamline the payment process if needed. However, the cashier insisted we ask the cooks directly.

The cooks were dismissive when trying to get their attention. This led to an awkward situation where the cooks questioned us: Who? When? Why? Where? While we stood there with our bag and drinks, they debated among themselves and made random remarks to us.

Ultimately, we were charged for the extra sauce, which isn't an issue in itself. However, after spending over $120 and leaving a tip, it would have been much appreciated to receive the sauce without the added...

My recent takeout experience left me thoroughly impressed and eager to return. The restaurant's modern and elegant decor does provide a comfortable setting for a delightful meal but the seating is limited and I hope they expand more in future. A small menu but it does offer a fantastic selection of Mediterranean delicacies, laid out in simple manner. I ordered the falafel shawarma wrap, falafel over rice. The items were impeccably cooked and infused with a delightful blend of herbs and spices. The portion size was generous, ensuring a satisfying and fulfilling meal. Do try their garlic sauce it’s yumm .I also ordered a baklava dessert. The sweet and flaky pastry layered with nuts and honey was perfect. Basically Halal is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a delightful Mediterranean dining experience.
