I've been eating at Hong Kong Harbor for many years(My posted photos from here have over 430,000 views!), but since the pandemic hit I haven't visited in quite some time. I ordered take-out twice from Hong Kong Harbor over the past month and these are my thoughts.
I know that there are rising food costs, but I was a bit shocked when I looked at the difference in prices for just the appetizer plates. The special thing about Hong Kong Harbor was that it had pretty great prices and great quality food in comparison to other Chinese restaurants in the area. This is why it was my absolute favourite spot to order from despite the fact that I don't live nearby, and why I chose it over all other Chinese restaurants North of Boston. However, due to the price increases it's now the highest priced Chinese restaurant in the area.
When I went inside to pick up my order the second time, I inquired about the price increase and was told, "everything costs more now". As I have worked in the service industry, and ran a restaurant myself before, I can totally understand the recent rise in costs associated with running a restaurant. However, at the same time, I also know the these price increases are in the excessive range in comparison to other similar Chinese restaurants in the area. I further asked if there was a change of ownership or management, since I didn't recognize any of the current staff, but my question was avoided and remained unanswered. I didn't want to create any more of a fuss, so I just paid for my food and politely left.
Judging by the photos posted by the restaurant here on Facebook, I'm guessing this change in ownership must have happened in around 2019/2020. I haven't been there in such a long time so it could have been sold even earlier, but without any additional information I really have no idea.
As far the the food quality was concerned the food was just as good as it has always been. The lobster sauce was flavorful, the pork fried rice was delicious, and all of the various appetizers that I ordered were all very very good. The only real issue is that the prices are now the most expensive in the area, and two appetizer plates for over $34 is a bit much in my opinion.
In conclusion, the food from Hong Kong Harbor is still pretty amazing, but since it's the most expensive Chinese food in the area I will have to think twice as to whether or not it's worth it to order from there anymore....
Read moreHong Kong Harbor is one of only a few super late night options around Maverick Square. It might be the first thing you see coming out of the T stop. It's part of my "home base", a row consisting of Burger King, Hong Kong Harbor, Dunkin Donuts, a convenience store and a liquor store - all of which I frequent on my walk home.
Hong Kong Harbor is not my number one choice, but in a pinch or when a hankering for Chinese take out comes on, it'll do. It features the classic menu of American Chinese food, General Gau's - Beef and broccoli - Egg drop soup - and everything else you'd find on the common menu that seems to be similar from restaurant to restaurant.
The truth is, it's okay. The online menu is wrong, so don't reference it. Things seem to change often and they do it manually via their in store posted menus. They aren't super fast and to me, they don't seem all that cheap. But it's satisfying which is more of what I want from a place like this rather than being impressed by the food.
It's an option for an East Boston resident, but not worth a trip of any sorts. It stands out for it's convenience and for truly being late night. I will say, I love egg drop soup and there's is always freshly prepared...
Read moreI have NEVER been so appalled in my entire life by this rubbish I could hardly call food! This nightmare began when I was delivered what seemed to be a cross between dog food and rhinoceros dung. After the foul smelling "food" infested my nasal cavity, I held back my vomit and I quickly closed the container. I then called this Hong Kong Restaurant back and to my surprise it was still in business. I explained to them what they delivered me couldn't have been sanitary or legal and they mumbled on the phone that I probably don't have good taste! I walked 20 minutes to this restaurant to bring this revolting food back. Not even the trash deserves this! And once I arrived the nasty vulgar woman at the counter refused to give me my full refund back! She uttered something in broken english about a "house charge" and a "delivery charge of $7.00" that I wouldn't get back! STAY AWAY!!!!!! Save your money and save your...
