The place has a pleasant asthetic and looks like it could be a really nice place, but I had a poor experience here. The food was just ok, and the service a D+... and the plus is for the other employees, not the guy behind the bar.
I had the eggplant with fries and a turmeric tea. The tea was good, the fries were tasty and crispy, but the sandwich lacked flavor. The eggplant was deep fried and was crunchy, but I would not order it again.
The biggest issue is had was the gentleman behind the bar was not at all helpful or friendly. I arrived at 3pm on a Monday, and apparently there is no table service until4pm. It was my first time there and I mentioned that I had never noticed the place before and how good the pastries looked. When I asked if the place was new, he told me the place had opened a few years ago, but didn't welcome me or bother to ask if he could help me. I told him I was looking to have a tea and a sandwich, still he didn't bother to hand me a menu or tell me to sit, so I grabbed a menu and asked, can I sit at a table? His response was, you can sit anywhere you want. I said ok, do I order with you? He said yes, because he was working alone. Ok…. So I order with him and he gives me a table number. When the tea was ready he calls out the name of the tea like there's 20 people in the place. There is only one other costumer, so obviously the tea is for me. I go up to get my tea, and there is no napkin, no spoon, and no comments about where to get anything. To my left I see a little tray with honey, sugar, and a small cup with 2 small spoons. I ask, are these clean spoons for me to use? He looks at me, looks at the spoons like I'm an idiot for asking, and says, I hope they're clean. Dude, I don't know if that cup is for used spoons or I'm supposed to help myself to a spoon. At this point I'm annoyed by his lack of help. I put honey in my cup, use one of the two spoons from the small cup and go to reach for a bar Napkin. He grabs one right from under my fingers and instead of giving it to me, proceeds to dry a glass with it. I then go to the table with my tea to wait for my food. The food comes out pretty fast, and someone else brings me the food…um, so you're not alone. The food comes with no utensils. So I have to get up and bother this guy again. Where can I find utensils I ask? On the other side of the middle counter he responds. Fine, I get my utensils, find the napkins there as well, and sit down to eat.
I don't know if he was having a bad day, he was just clueless, or he's just a bar tender and feels it's not his job to help. There was only one other customer in the place, so he wasn't rushed or too busy to be more informative. If they are going to allow you to eat at the table but not give table service they need to explain how it's going to go down. This guy was acting like I was asking him a bunch of dumb questions. At around 4pm 2 other employees appeared and they at least acknowledged me and said to have a good night while I was leaving.
I rarely give bad reviews, but after spending $30 on a mediocre sandwich and a cup of tea and getting treated like I was a bother, the establishment needs to know they can do better. If your bartender doesn't want to be bothered taking orders, hire wait staff to help or do take out only until 4pm. If you are going to continue to serve food this way, make sure your staff knows to be more helpful to people coming in who may not be familiar with how the...
Read moreI really really wanted to love this place. I have been following on social media for a while waiting for it to open and have been so excited. My partner and I live in the area and we were pumped to have a new local spot to try out after Birch Street Bistro closed. Unfortunately, I don't think we will return for a while until they work out some opening kinks.
Pros: -Our server was really nice and attentive. -The drinks were good, nothing incredibly memorable but they were tasty and hit the spot. (However, they are more expensive than the drinks at both 753 South and Sophia's, both places that have equally if not better drinks). -They have a solid wine list and I was excited to see they have orange wine by the glass. -They have real mocktails, not just juice based ones but mocktails that actually use quality nonalcoholic liquors such as Ritual and Everleaf. This made me excited. -My burger was good. Again, nothing super memorable but it was a solid burger.
Cons: -There is no menu on their website. This was fine since we wanted to try it regardless, however the menu seems overall bizarre and disjointed. It feels like it has an identity crisis. While this doesn't affect me, the only nonvegetarian main dish option was gnocchi. -The space lacks charm. There is almost nothing on the walls. It made us miss how cozy the space felt when it was a previous restaurant. -The brussel sprouts we ordered as an appetizer took over thirty minutes to come out and were really undercooked. The sauce they were in and bacon topping it came with was good though. -My partner ordered the chicken sandwich. It was a really generous piece of chicken, however the center of the thickest and middle part of the sandwich was nearly raw. We never send food back but we had to, it truly was not safe to eat and cost $22. The server was really nice about it but it was not taken off of the check and when a new one was brought out you could tell they overcompensated by just leaving it in the deep fryer and overcooking it to the point that it was basically black.
I know this is a new small business and I will give them a second chance in a few months, however we were really disappointed considering our bill was $135 after tip. I don't like leaving negative reviews but it is early enough where they can take constructive feedback and...
Read moreUpdate from 5 to 4 stars. It’s happened twice that the greens were so salty I could not eat them. It has not happened to me at any other good restaurant. I informed the server and he said he will pass it on to the kitchen. I can tolerate a salty mistake, but this was beyond regular amounts. Remember: you can always add more salt, but you can’t take it out!
Drinks: This is my favorite place to go out for drinks in Roslindale. The atmosphere is great for relaxing and conversation. Came here with my extended family, for date nights with my husband, whatever occasion involves a drink, this place is my go to.
Food: I am a vegetarian. So I didn’t try the burger. But for what I did try, there is room for improvement. I’ve had a salad that was too salty, and appetizers that were a bit too greasy, but also a few good meals. So, I think the food menu is still work in progress and I expect it will get better with time.
Desert: Had the chocolate cake and it was very good. I don’t eat fritters and I’m not a fan of cheesecake. So, from my perspective the desert menu should be expanded to include a more luxurious option like a tiramisu or something else.
Service has been really good each time I visited.
Overall, I really enjoy this place and wish them all the best. I think it’s a 4 star for the overall experience, even if food...
