I had been anticipating dining at Sauce on Bowdoin, especially after a very good friend highly recommended it. Black-owned business enthusiast that I am, I was excited to experience what this local eatery had to offer, but unfortunately, my initial experience left me angrier than amazed.
I ordered dinner from their website, opting for pickup at 6:45 pm. My order was time stamped at 8:35 AM, and being the first order of the day, I was hoping that everything would go on without a hitch. But when I arrived exactly at 6:45 pm, I was told my order was not yet ready. Initially, I thought it was going to take a few more minutes, but I did not get the last part of my order until 7:30 pm—a 45-minute wait for an on-line pre-paid order.
To make matters even more infuriating was watching other customers who were behind me ordering and receiving food right away. I couldn't help but notice a pattern: if they were regular or seemed known to the employees, their order got extra care, and they got served way faster. I waited in line, meanwhile, for food ordered ages ago. The one reason I did not leave was that my family had also come to wait at home for the food to be ready, and I had already paid.
In good faith, I did not feel like an appreciated customer, which was disappointing since I support Black-owned business at home and during my travels across the country and world.
I really wanted to have a good experience. Regarding the food, it was good—although nothing to praise about. The steak tips rice bowl needed more meat, and the chicken teriyaki wrap and fries were too salty. Nevertheless, the oxtail fries and chicken and shrimp pasta did not let my family down.
I hope that my experience was an anomaly, but I couldn't help but report it, especially considering how much I was anticipating from Sauce on Bowdoin. Had I realized how long the wait was going to take, I might have simply walked in and ordered right away. I may attempt to order again at the restaurant in the future, but I do hope they make the effort to better their service, particularly for online orders, so that all customers—first-time and...
