i've been on a gelato kick so of course when i was strolling down pearl st on the 4th of july, i had to check out this super adorable gelato shop. first impression when i glanced at the menu was, "this is soo boulder!" in an awesomely-weird way. not only could you get an affogato or gelato root beer float, they offered a kombucha gelato float. reaallyyy? haha. i won't knock kombucha-- it has it's place and is a boulderite staple, but i'm not sure how i feel about combining it with something sinfully delicious like gelato. that's like trying to combine broccoli and birthday cake. why ruin a good thing? but hey, it's just an option so for those who are adventurous or die-hard boulderite enough to try it, it's there. as far as the gelato itself, the selection of flavors was definitely a good mix of the standard offerings (like vanilla, chocolate, stracciatella, strawberry sorbet... but no pistachio!) and some really crazy stuff (like a cereal flavor, peach bbq, sweet corn, etc). the peach bbq and sweet corn tasted like a summer bbq but were just weird more so than unique and delicious... i think the peach bbq had pieces of bacon in it and the sweet corn had freeze dried corn on top. we settled on the cereal flavor, a blackberry bourbon (which didn't taste of alcohol at all to me), and a blueberry crisp. they were good, but nothing too too memorable, and the consistency was a bit on the watery/melty side. pricewise, those 3 scoops ran $7.35 or so-- on the pricey side, but it is pearl st. and i've been spoiled by crazy cheap and delicious gelato in italy. it was fun to try out fior di latte and sample their interesting flavors, but i'm not in any big...
Read moreStopped in for gelato and coffee after meeting someone along Pearl St. We ended up ordering a pair of lattes and a flight of gelato (6 scoops, any flavors you want).
The flight was a bit pricey, at $15 for 6 scoops of gelato. But, the flavors were interesting and delicious. Some we liked more than others. But we also received two toppings with the flight, which included a bourbon caramel sauce, which was very tasty. Overall, it's a cheaper option if you have 2-3 people (or more) that want to try a bunch of different flavors, and you don't mind sharing.
The coffee, on the other hand, was, to be blunt, not good. Whatever beans they use must be a VERY dark roast, because it tasted like burnt coffee beans. Bitterness and smoky coffee overwhelmed the latte. I ended up adding a half-scoop of gelato and some of the caramel to help tame it a bit. That helped, but it still wasn't very good. Espresso doesn't mean it has to be super-dark!
Seating is quite limited, with a few tables inside and a few more outside. Had no issues here. The place was empty due to the rain.
Lastly, the service was just okay. Friendly, but distant. The staff were obviously bored and were not terribly outgoing, to say the least. It was a rainy day, so I'm sure sales were slow. But, the pair working there were more interested in going home than helping us.
While I might return for the tasty gelato, I hope they find a better coffee for their espresso drinks. If not for the gelato, I doubt they'd survive with a Starbuck's next door.
Overall experience: just so-so. May or may...
Read moreWe absolutely love Gelato Boy. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. We go here at least once a week especially when they release new flavors. My wife has dietary restrictions, and there are plenty of choices to choose from here, both gluten free and vegan. Because we love it so much, my wife had asked that we get her birthday cake from here.
I completely forgot to order her cake in time and was in a panic to try to get her the cake. I reached out to the store, and they were able to rush the order fast enough to get the cake right on time! Not only was their customer service a million steps above any other business I've experienced but the cake was absolutely phenomenal. It couldn't have been any better! I could eat pounds of the almond cookie on the bottom of the gluten free vegan cake. Our entire family was impressed, and my Wife stated that this cake will now be a new birthday tradition (please know that my wife is a professional Baker and takes her birthday dessert very seriously). It is extremely hard to make things that are gluten free and vegan taste good, but Gelato Boy has managed to master it. You would be doing yourself a disservice to not indulge in the goodies that this place...
