Passively aggressive poor service standards.
Had 3 different service staff, nobody informed me that I was being switched either time.
The overly advertised beverages I wanted weren’t available (on a Friday night @ 6-7 pm) and the ones I was served progressively got worse… one drink came in a pint glass full but watered down, next two drinks came in a rocks glass first full then less than half full… an option for ordering pitchers was advertised, yet when I ordered it I was told I can’t have it.
Food was mediocre at best. Not salted properly or at all. The bison burger I was told should be ordered medium came out well done but looked like it had been steamed (no color other than pale meat, no caramelization or char at all), had more blue cheese on it than meat and the BBQ sauce was just wetted no flavor ketchup. Fries & chips were undercooked, under-salted and the soup of the day came out room temperature, not hot. Worst of all… no dessert menu at all… I was told “we just have beer”… yeah none of the beer that was advertised that I wanted was available… the beer menu was written with marker on a board… if you don’t have it, wipe it off the board and stop advertising it. Website states it’s “Stout month” but they didn’t have the 2 stouts I wanted that were advertised.
There were multiple tables open & I asked for a booth. The looks I got for requesting a booth made me feel like I had done something wrong and that attitude stayed with all the different service staff that took my orders and made me wait for my food all evening … fries and soup shouldn’t take 45 minutes then come out not hot and fresh.
One of the worst experiences I’ve had at a restaurant as a customer. I felt like I was being pushed out the door with underwhelming service and passive aggressive behavior. I’ve never felt so alone in a crowded area. Not once did it seem like management or service staffed actually cared I was there or getting poor service.
Music was way too loud and consequently everyone was trying to talk over it adding to the din, making it very difficult to relax or enjoy anything while waiting too long for the not good food & poorly...

We’ve been here 3 or more times a month since moving nearby last year and have found it pretty solid (if kinda slow), but the past two months have been super disappointing. In June, we waited for a table, got some drinks at the bar, and when we were seated no one acknowledged us for 20 minutes. I flagged down the hostess and said we hadn’t been served at all, she said she would help, and then she never did. We waited another ten minutes, left some cash on the table to pay for our drinks and got outta there.
The next visit was much worse. We waited for a table, waited a while to put in our order, and then waited and waited and waited for our food. We noticed no one around us was eating; everyone seemed to be waiting. I noticed there were only two people in the kitchen. My partner went to the register and asked if we could just get our food to go. Another ten minutes went by, we got our stuff and left. It was 50 minutes after we sat down. When we got home, my chicken sandwich had the jalapeno mayo that I specifically asked to not be on it. I can’t believe we paid $70 for that visit!
Last week we went again on a weeknight. It was extremely loud, and ten minutes went by without anyone acknowledging us. Given our recent experiences, we knew that wasn’t a good sign, so we just left.
Maybe in the fall when the students are back they’ll have more servers and we’ll try it again. But we’re really running out of patience here. Before this summer I would have told you the food was pretty great and decently priced, the service is kinda slow in general (I think this is a Boulder thing) but the people are really nice so we always overlooked that. Now I don’t know what to think. I always try to be patient with food service; I worked in food service and I know customers can be awful and it can just be a hard job. We’re patient and we tip really well and we’re starting to feel...
Read moreI visited Under the Sun with my family for a final meal before they closed, as we had enjoyed the place in the past. Unfortunately, what we encountered was beyond shocking. While waiting to put our names on the waitlist (about an hour), Kevin, the owner, walked by and told us, "This is not going to work, she's here," referring to my three-year-old who was simply standing in his way. At first, I thought I misheard, but when he came back and saw her in the same spot, he completely lost it.
He started yelling at us to leave, saying, "Go to Illegal Pete’s, I don't want you here, leave now, you're never coming back." My daughter was so upset she started crying, asking, "What did I do wrong?" It was heartbreaking and enraging to see her treated this way. Kevin’s behavior was completely unhinged and uncalled for, targeting a three-year-old for just standing in his way. I was so furious that I spilled beer on the floor before we left.
If Kevin tries to say otherwise, I have the testimony of friends and others who were in line with us—I even grabbed their phone numbers just in case. Since I was able to put my number down, I also received a message from a horrified employee who contacted me last night, expressing their shock at what happened.
Additionally, I was Googling Kevin’s name last night and found a very concerning Reddit thread where he is allegedly accused of abusive behavior.
This was one of the most insane and disappointing experiences I’ve ever had at a restaurant. I cannot recommend this place—or any place owned by Kevin—based on how he treats his customers, especially children. Stay away from Southern Sun and Mountain Sun as well, as he owns...
