I am totally amazed about all the good reviews, must be their friends, and the other hipsters that go there...
Been to the place twice. Cons: Average tacos, not much meat, and overpriced. Cleanliness is absurd. All the male staff had beards, and long hair in a bun. At least the men had their hair up. The women had hair hanging down into food and drinks while she served. No washing of hands after staff touched their beards, mouths, and Noses....
The place is ran by "hipsters", and as long as you have a beard, and a bun, and dig their lifestyle, you are welcome. Their service for the"Baby Boom Generation" is not up to par with the service they give their own hipster clients. Prices are high, and selection of alcohol (no scotch, no whisky, no domestic beers (( When I asked for a domestic Coors, I was given a smile like I was an idiot)) ) is minimal. Cheapest beer is $6.50, and appears to be only 12 ounces Menu is deceptive. They say "Selected Beers are discounted a $1 at Happy Hour" , yet there is no indication of which beers are discounted. Then they charged me full price... When I asked why full price during Happy Hour, they gave me an excuse that I should have known. When I asked to have it pointed out on the menu, they could not support it. Then they smirked at me when giving me a $2 refund. I told them it should only be a $1, that one was before happy hour, and the other was during happy hour. This was meant with a "DUDE" it is not big deal. I said it was, and threw them a $1 and they could not believe it.
Pros: Good Music selection, nice atmosphere. The clients are personable, and easy to talk to. Food OK, not remarkable.
To the owner, I was so excited to see your place. This area of Boulder needs a neighborhood bar.... yours is not it. I can see that you answer all the bad reviews, which is good business practice, but what comes though in your responses is your concedening attitude about how the reviewers must be wrong... Don't bother asking me to come in... I do not have the time. We will see how long you remain there.... Of course I am wrong because I am not "hipster".... it is your generation... you can not help it that you could not possibly be wrong. BTW i never write reviews, but thought other needed the...
Read moreComing from Austin TX and spending a lot of time south of the border, you might say our taco bar sits pretty high. But we are very open-minded and always down for a new twist on our regular hometown staple. We heard good things about McDevitt and booked them to cater our DIY destination wedding in Longmont. They absolutely slayed.
Everything was super easy, professional, and delicious, from our email interactions with Jon (chief taco wizard) to our personalized, pre-wedding taco/sides/appetizer feast for two, and of course, the wedding itself. I will say this -- if you go this route (for a wedding or other big catering event), be sure to fast and mentally prepare yourself for the taco preview. It is gloriously indulgent and overwhelming, and you need to be on your A-game to make important life decisions (ie, selecting your favorites to determine the event menu) while fending off the blissful, inevitable food coma. There is no hammock on hand at the restaurant, so maybe grab a Lyft or arrange for a designated driver.
As for the wedding itself, all I can say is they came, the food was just as amazing as when we sampled it at the restaurant, and we conquered. Most of it...with all the leftovers swiftly gathered for our enjoyment in the days that followed. It was effortless and delicious.
It's all a wonderful blur at this point, but I think we settled on four of their tacos (catfish, fun guy (fungi), carne asada, and chipotle peach chicken), plus Mexican street-style corn and a sweet potato dish, with a nopal bruschetta appetizer. Oh and chips and salsa, of course -- featuring McDevitt's unique array of salsas. I think maybe the tomatillo salsa was our favorite, but honestly I devoured them all. They were the kind of delectable that made you pause and wonder if you even needed the chip to enjoy. Yes, I would shamelessly drink these straight from the bowl. Not at our wedding, of course....but certainly afterward in private.
So yep, mission fully accomplished. McDevitt holds its own in the taco universe any day of the week, and especially on our most special of days! Thank you for sharing all your unique flavors and concoctions with us -- and dazzling our guests from...
Read more"Eureka!", is the first word which comes to mind after scrumptiously gnoshing on the best tacos and taco-shop margs that I have ever had(and I have had MANY over the years). Upon polishing-off an order of the freshest hand-made tortilla chips & salsa this side of MX (an absolute "must" after a long ride), we begun to dig in to the glorious melody of beef, shredded pork, sweet potatoes, and pork belly. Taco style. The way you want it, with freshly-made tortillas providing the flavor-surfboard upon which were layered our choice of delicious proteins, peppers, onions, beans, etc. This is not your father's taco shop, this is a full-blown Taco Movement. I, like you, reader, march to the beat of Taco. And with THESE tacos, I'll cry it from the tops of the Flatirons and have it reverberate down through to the hungry citizens and students and dwellers of this amazing community of people from all over to let them know that their taco prayers have been answered. These folks are putting together hand-held works of flavor-art, with a nod to the rich cultural cuisine South of the Border, and Bob Ross-ing in a "happy cloud" brushstroke of modernity and current cooking/preparation styles. I had the beer-braised beef, the Tornado with many fresh options, and the braised pork belly. Definitely get the pork belly and punch your ticket straight to Cloud 9.
The Staff: welcoming, friendly, and choc-full of the crunchy-meets-neuvo-enthusiastic enjoyer of life and disher-of-delicious.
The Food (and by "food" I mean Ambrosia for MesoAmerican Gods): simply spectacular. I dare anyone to to visit this Boulder Gem and find me something on the menu that isn't well-executed.
The Drinks: Made fresh, every day, is an expertly curated variety of produce options awaiting their tango with high-end tequila for a refreshing experience unlike any other. An excellent beer selection leaves no doubt that these folks care about keeping it local and "Heady".
The Ambiance: Bright, fun, and full of life! Energetic decor, with a side of exuberant-fiesta that filled my soul!
Do yourself a favor and supply your cortex happy-receptors with the future of Tacos! Put some...
