UPDATE - recently added another star because their margaritas are delicious! i prefer mine heavy on fresh lime and not sweet or syrupy. These fit the bill nicely for me - they are refreshing, flavorful, and potent! GOOD JOB PICA'S!
This place is new, and while friendly and welcoming, still a bit inconsistent. I had the driest chicken served to me ever in my life (in a taco), but very juicy carnitas. The meat texture and moisture level were great, but there was not enough salt, pepper, spices. It's as if pork were simmered with onions and then that was it. Need a little something else in these carnitas.
The mahi taco was good though! The fish was moist and decently seasoned.
On another visit I had a pork adobado burrito. The pork was tender, again flavorless (i guess their recipe stinks), and was smothered in something that tasted like Open Pit BBQ sauce. I'd never get it again. I'm not picky at all, and I honestly have no idea how people like the adobado sauce.
Last time i went i just got chips and salsa and one carne asada taco. The salsa is a fresh pico de gallo and was delicious. The chips were a little to heavy/thick for my taste (and don't go well with the fresca salsa they serve up), but still homemade and if you like a really thick chip you'll probably love these. The carne asada taco was very tasty and tender. Would get again for sure.
According to my several experiences - fish/beef stuff is great, chicken and pork stuff needs work. Drink a marg and...
Read moreA family favorite. We go to Pica's at least once a month. The kids love it - not just for the food but also the games, the outdoor patio, and the funky Mexican decor. And we adults love it for, well, the same reasons. Great vegetarian options. The Baja style fish tacos are excellent. And the flan is probably the best I've had in my life - and I've had a lot of flan. The only thing is it varies a bit. When it's good, it's to die for. When it's not good (which is rare) it's still decent, but nothing to write home about. The one thing I don't like about this place is the TV. I generally avoid restaurants with TVs. But it's almost always soccer, it's only one TV off to the side so it's easy to avoid usually, and unless it's the World Cup, the volume is usually low. Btw, I wouldn't call this place inexpensive, despite the very casual vibe. I've been surprised at how many times our family of 4 (2 kids) spent $60 there (with a couple drinks and maybe a flan). But it's worth it. With the west side of Boulder getting sometimes a bit too pricey and busy, it's nice that Pica's is doing their part to help establish a cool commerical district on...
Read moreSolid quick and casual Mexican eats I've enjoyed eating here on my own, with coworkers, with my wife and as a family with our two small children. In fact, I often see many families with children here before or after sports practice and the like. For me it's location lends itself to being a good place to get some reasonably priced, reasonably good food on your way to and from somewhere else. Order at the counter, take a number and find a seat in one of two distinct seating areas inside or a nice shady and spacious enclosed patio outside. Atmosphere is simultaneously relaxed and upbeat. There are board games and books and often soccer matches are being shown on one wall-mounted tv. Beer and decent margaritas available at the counter. Pretty standard Mexican fare for Boulder. Tacos, burritos, beans and rice. A salad or two. All of it pretty good, decent selection for vegetarians and folks with dietary restrictions. I'd give 5 stars if the food were a little better or a little cheaper. As it is, 4 stars are well earned and I'll keep...
