8/4/21 UPDATE After over a year of Golden Star Chinese Food being closed due to Covid and permit problems, I found out they finally were able to open YAY and Chinese is what's for dinner! I can't believe the suffering myself, my husband, and many other people have gone through of not having Golden Star opened; true, I was able to find acceptable places to get a quick fix. Still, Golden Star was the "Star" of Chinese food, at least for many people in this area and us, plus the restaurant is less than 10 minutes from my house!
So, we decided not to dine in; instead, we did take out. I ordered the Chef Combination Special #2, including Beef Chow mein, Cantonese, and Pork Fried Rice. With this particular meal, I was able to choose one more item between the seven items listed, I chose Deep Fried Shrimp, yes I said the words deep-fried, and it's rare for me. I can't remember ever ordering deep-fried shrimp before, but for whatever reason, I wanted it this evening, and it was good! Obviously, you go into eating Chinese food knowing that your arteries are crying and begging you to look the other way, but you smile and plow it in! The pork fried rice to perfection and the beef chow mein Cantonese, remarkable just as before; everything was full of flavor, tasted fresh, and no regrets on those deep fried shrimp, at least not right now ;)
My husband had the Peking Sesame Beef with fried rice instead of steamed white rice. Before Covid, they would typically ask what kind of heat you wanted between one and five, five being the hottest. They didn't ask that this time; although being delicious, there was no heat. We can't complain; the taste was certainly there all the way around and we'll re-order that in the future and request some heat =D
It was really nice seeing a couple of the ladies that worked there prior, and they were as friendly as before, it almost felt like old times ;)
Golden Star Restaurant is dated and needed some help; I did recognize one improvement, which happened to be new flooring. The flooring helped, and gave it a fresher feel. There are still improvements that need to happen; perhaps now it's a work in progress nonetheless; we are so happy they have re-opened!!!
Golden Stars Location is 3950 Wheaton Way, Bremerton, Washington. They are right across Wheaton Way from the transit center.
If you haven't tried Golden Star, stick them on your to-do list; the best place locally for Chinese food!
The Golden Star has consistently good Chinese food, and nice portions for the price. The staff is friendly but overworked, many times I have had lunch there only to see one waitress waiting a lot of tables in different areas of the restaurant; so it's a tad slow getting waited on sometimes or receiving your food, but in this area, sometimes it's well worth the wait. The restaurant is dated, definitely could...
Read moreOk, I'm old and I just don't care what anyone thinks of my food preferences. I grew up on old fashioned Chinese food. Not that new age Asian fusion stuff that comes in a fancy low light noir decorative room. Puh-leeze. Give me the fake ceramic good luck pottery, a pond with goldfish, preferably under a bridge, bright overhead lights because the building has no windows. Make sure there are booths, and the whole place is full of seniors having supper at 4pm before moving to the sleezy bar out back to drink before the party crowd shows up. Fill the menu with combo meals for your whole family, or individual meals that include all the basics. Ala carte dinners that come with enough food to feed your family for a week. All the soups. Sticky sauces, fake sweet and sour that comes in neon orange colors not found in nature. I crave this stuff. How hard is it to find good, tender BBQ pork that comes with the hottest mustard this side of Death Valley? Almond chicken in gravy with actual almonds? And nirvana in my mouth - Almond Chicken SUBGUM Chow Mein with Crunchy Noodles. Melt in your mouth egg rolls. Superb crab puffs, that had only a hint of crab, but the cream cheese was to die for. I live an hour from the place, and my entire order was to go. I waited about 20 minutes for it to be ready, and got home in just under an hour. We ate about 2 hours later. There were so many containers, I lost my subgum and called to complain. Had to call back and retract when I found it. Sorry! This entire meal was probably the best I've had in 30 years, when I was part of the party crowd who met everyone for dinner, then hit the sleezy bar out back for the local hard rock cover band. I have found my favorite restaurant after enjoying my over abundant...
Read moreWe went on a Thursday at about 615 pm, which according to this site is their busiest time.
There were several groups ahead of us and after us but they were ordering take away, not eating in. Our wait for a table was less than 15 minutes.
Our waitress was prompt and attentive, but overly expressive in the happiness.
The tea was HOT, but my cup had dirty lipstick on the rim and inside the rim. The waitress was ever so sorry.
We ordered and also ordered an appetizer. The appetizer came just shortly before our meal. The table next to us arrived when we were ordering our food and they had their appetizers well before us, but the waitress said ours was coming, which it did.
I had the moo goo guy pan and it was really good. But it was the first time that I had ever had it so I can't compare it to any place else. My brother enjoyed his meal. But said it wasn't a place he would go out of the way to order from.
I had ice tea to drink and the glass was all ice. I couldn't stir without ice falling out. The tea was about 4 or 5 times as strong as I have ever had. If they took that tea, made it hot, and then poured it over all that ice to melt it, it probably would have been perfect. But as it was, it wasn't very good at all.
Prices are good. Comparable to other local Chinese restaurants.
Overall, OK but probably not a place we...
