A couple of weeks ago I drove by and spotted the Bat & Ball Pub and decided to give it a try. I walked in and was struck by the quaint pub atmosphere. I sat at the bar and was immediately greeted by a charming and friendly bartender who asked. what I wanted to drink. I stayed for a couple of beers and had lunch which I thoroughly enjoyed. Today I drove 25 minutes to revisit my newfound favorite pub but, this time, had a completely different experience. I walked in and sat at the bar but the bartender was MIA. After a couple of minutes she yelled from the back that she would be right with us but it was an additional ten minutes or so before she came to take our drink orders. We asked for menus but we're told we had to scan the code with our phones. Something I detest and don't remember having to do on my first visit. Service from there was equally disappointing.
My only other complaint is that the only Irish beer they offer is Guinness and there are no English beer offerings either on tap or in cans or bottles. Nothing against Guinness but a nice bitter or ESB would go perfectly with the place.
I believe in second chances so I'll probably give it another try but, if the service proves to be hit or miss, I may have to find a new favorite...
Read moreOne of those reviews that I hope the owners read because there is a lot of potential in this neglected bar/resturant. It's the pub that 2001 forgot. Never busy despite good food, mainly because it's dark and generic. The decor is just sad. One Cubs Jersey and a paddle- zero personality. The scotch cylinders need to go. Talisker 10 year? Who cares? They're tacky and block the decorative finishes above the "Loos" and "Car Park" script. Speaking of the script, just redo the entire rear of the restaurant. Those three booths are depressing and NEVER full. The red high picnic tables ruin the curb appeal from out front. Now, about the drinks- it's clear the selection is picked by the liquor distributor, not a the proprietor. There are 15 bottles of flavored Absolut displayed, which is a headache on multiple levels. The taps are sadly repetitive, but at least they have one Terrapin and one Southbound. The Guinness pours fine, but a bit cold. The highlight is the food, but God, that menu is nuts! Several great choices, but making a choice is difficult with 35 distinct items in the queue. Cut it in half and focus on the key items. 11 salad options is overkill. 2-star considering the faults, but this has potential to be a casual...
Read moreI like this spot a lot. It is a small little local spot and always has an interesting crowd of people in it. It feels like a genuine pub has the fit and finish of one on the inside. Maybe not the best place to watch a game as the TVs aren't in the best spot but this is more a spot have some drinks and chat. Food is really good and the way they prepare the food, present it, and the way it tastes shows they take pride in doing it the right way. It is also a great spot to eat late and they get the food out to you quick. The staff has been great every time I come in and started calling me by name after just my second time visiting! Nice patio area, too. Bat and Ball Pub knows what it is and...
