In the heart of our charming New England town, nestled on Maine street amid the ebb and flow of daily life, there exists a culinary oasis, a gem of gastronomic artistry that has come to be known as the Big Top Deli. It is my great pleasure to pen this review, for within the walls of this venerable establishment, I have embarked on a sensory journey, in which 20th century circus nostalgia and appetite harmoniously converge.
Tony, the proprietor and culinary maestro behind this establishment, has consistently dazzled the taste buds of many residents (myself included) through an unwavering commitment to excellence. Within the hallowed halls of the Big Top Deli, one discovers an extensive menu, a veritable lexicon of deli delight. Over and again, I find myself returning to the French dip with Swiss. A singular symphony of flavor and texture, this sandwich stands as a testament to Tony's virtuosity. Each bite, an orchestration of succulent roast beef embraced by the tender caress of Swiss cheese, sublimely ensconced within a delicate bulkie roll, and accompanied by an au jus so divine that even a gourmand's palate would weep tears of joy.
However, it is not the simple, high-quality ingredients alone that elevate this humble sandwich shop to greatness. It is the artful composition, the meticulous attention to detail, and the unwavering commitment to quality that set the Big Top Deli apart. It is a shrine to sandwich artisanship, and Tony, its high priest, ensures that each sandwich is a sacred offering to the discerning connoisseur.
I must not neglect to celebrate the dedicated individuals who grace the counter, particularly Michael. His ever-present smile and kind words are like rays of sunshine in a world often shrouded by clouds. He stands as a paragon of warmth and hospitality; a welcoming presence that enhances the dining experience and leaves one with a lasting impression of affable service.
In the autumn months, I find myself torn between the exquisite French dip and a delightful contender known as "The Gobbler." The latter is a culinary embodiment of Thanksgiving itself in sandwich form, weaving together turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce into a harmonious tapestry of autumnal flavors. It is as if the essence of a Thanksgiving feast has been distilled into a handheld masterpiece, perfect for savoring while wandering through the colorful tapestry of fall foliage that graces our charming little community.
I have heard whispers of the fresh breakfast sandwiches and aromatic coffee that grace the morning hours, though, regrettably, I have yet to partake in this early morning communion. One can only imagine that the same level of dedication and craftsmanship that defines their sandwiches permeates every facet of the menu, elevating even the humble breakfast sandwich to the level of epicurean art. The promise of a morning visit lingers like an unturned page in the novel of my culinary exploration, an unwritten chapter yet to be savored.
In closing, the Big Top Deli is more than a sandwich shop; it is a place where artistry and sustenance coalesce. Tony's unwavering commitment to quality and Michael's warm embrace are the cornerstones of this establishment, and their contributions are nothing short of sublime. As I return, time and again, to savor the French dip with Swiss and the seasonal delight of "The Gobbler," I am reminded that within the confines of a well-crafted sandwich, one can find the essence of a town's culinary soul.

Read moreAbsolutely the worst customer service I’ve ever received at a food establishment. We were out of towners and we always try to go to local places when away. Looked up this place and thought wow it’s packed and must be good. There was ppl standing outside waiting for their orders (covid) we got in line to order and when it go to be our turn we stepped up to order and then got shoo-d away... oh ok no problem. Thought that was kinda rude but the one guy working prob had to get caught up on getting other orders out. Again I think he could have said hey guys, I’m sorry give me a moment. Instead of just literally putting his hand up and being rude. But whatever to each their own. We proceeded to wait our turn. Then a lady seen us waiting and came up to us and asked, have you already ordered? My husband answered “No but we are trying to order” The business owner/waiter whatever you wanna call him then got very rude and in a condescending tone got smart with us. We immediately walked away. I would never spend any money at a place where the employees talk to customers like that. Never. Post covid in the restaurant/service industry, you’d think ppl would be kinder.
Edited to add::: even his “response” is passive aggressive. My exact point with my review. Save your money and...
Read moreMy wife and twin infants stopped in to Big Top after landing in Portland and hitting an immediate drive up to Rockland. We were looking for an easy bite to eat in a casual environment to try and be simple since we had the kids and a long day behind us. We got a very friendly greeting while looking at the large menu board. I got the Reuben and my wife the Roy. Both were delicious. The cashier asked if we would like to get anything for the kids and offered a few friendly options — which was helpful for my fried brain. The guys behind the counter bantered a bit as they were wrapping up and engaged with everyone who came in. You could tell they are a staple of the community.
Cute town, easy parking, tasty sandwiches. Yall should stop in, I’m...
