We were heading to our hotel, when we passed this little parking lot and we saw the sign for the swinging bridge - after we check in, we'll stop back to check it out.
When we arrived, there were a couple parking spots available. We got out of the car and threw on a jacket - it was ever so slightly drizzing and it was a little chilly, so a jacket made sense.
We walked across the bridge, stopping in the middle to look up and down the river. What a beautiful place! Serene with these beautiful rocks in the water. We watched maple leaves float by under the bridge.
We walked across and met a very nice lady who was walking her dog. She told us all about the area - she lives in Topham (the other side of the bridge). We had a great conversation, then we bid farewell and decided to walk a little on the other side! There's a nice walking trail, which we followed to the end (where it meets the street). We walked a little further down the street and went under the train bridge. An old bridge - pretty cool. We kept walking and found ourselves on a tiny street, which soon became someone's private driveway. We hung out for a few minutes, then headed back - telling ghost stories of the train bridge! When we got to the swinging bridge, we walked back across, again stopping in the middle to enjoy the clean fresh air, the calming sound of the water moving below us and the beautiful view.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time visiting the Androscoggin...
Read moreNice bridge, but out of the way - if your in that area its worth a stop, parking lot near its entrance is ridiculously small so you may have to park elsewhere. 4 spots max on one side FYI.
And its a bridge on suspension cables so as you walk it sways and bobs, so running across it like a mad man is both fun and nauseating, depending on your age.
There is a plaque with info about the bridge just so you can learn something but i cant see this walkway being used that much as they're arent as many pedestrians as they used to be in our car centric world but im sure the local kids get a kick out of it everytime they use it.
It seems to be in dire need of some paint and the cables seem to have a.sheen of rust that doesn't inspire confidence upon closer inspection but im sure the state does yearly inspections so its most lkely safe (hey we walked across it!)
You have been warned, kids will love it, parents...

My last trip I zoomed past this bridge from the backseat and vowed that never again would I be denied the opportunity to experience its majesty and wonder. It is a really awesome bridge!
Beautiful views anyway you look. It is fun and wobbly. Maybe you will get lucky like I was and have the running club pass over whilst you are in the middle, jostling and shaking the whole span to such states of a terrific madness that you cling to the bridge as though you were a babe and it your mother. "Keep me safe sweet Androscoggin Swinging Bridge, please!" and she gently replies 'I am your bridge and you my charge... I will safely bear you to safe banks'. And, damned if she didn't.
Wonderful bridge. Highly recommend. Especially if there are runners to get that...
