My wife and I were out for our anniversary and had attempted to go to two restaurants before finally landing at this spot. The other two were closed for various reasons lo and behold. Bad luck to start. It got worse. Neither one of us really wanted sushi or we would have gone to Kume but decided we could get other entrees besides sushi and that we would give this place a try. We were already in Brunswick so why not support local. When we walked in it was not busy as it was about 4:30. The floor was sticky and there were two workers both men standing on the other side of the counter having a conversation. They never acknowledged us until after they were done. Apparently we weren’t important. So not feeling very good at this point but still hanging in there. We were finally seated and ordered a couple of drinks. I ordered a teriyaki chicken skewer with scallions and mushrooms as an app, my wife, veggie dumplings. Both just ok. My skewer components were grilled but not seasoned at all and then drenched with cheap teriyaki sauce. She ordered a tempura platter $19 and I ordered the Teriyaki sirloin $26. Both entrees came with side salad and miso soup. Soup was ok but here’s where things got really bad. I was two bites into my salad when I swirled out a 8 inch long black hair 🤮 It was so long that when I lifted it out of my salad with my fork there were literally salad pieces dangling from it. I attempted a few times to get the attention of staff member until I finally had to lift it out of my salad again and show it enough so that the now full dinning room could see. Finally I was only offered a new salad and not even a new utensil. I told my wife we should have walked out right then but we decided to stay and hope our entrees were better. They were not. My steak was a very cheap cut of pre frozen sirloin. It was cooked medium as I ordered but again had no seasoning on the steak and it was drenched in the same cheap teriyaki sauce as my skewers. Once the sauce wore off in my mouth the steak was dry. That’s why I believe it was frozen. If cooked properly like it was it should have been moist and tender. It was not. The entree came with two pieces of carrots, two pieces of broccoli and a pile of plain white sticky rice. Not even fried rice or jasmine rice or anything with any flavor. Plain rice. Then there’s my wife’s tempura, so bad she only ate 2 pieces. I fed the rest to my local wilderness critters. Some of it they wouldn’t even eat. The tempura was all prepared so that it all tasted the same and each piece was draped over a chunk of plain white sticky rice. Who does that? Drake tempura over plain white sushi sticky rice. After the hair incident we were given dirty looks by the staff as if we planted it. The meal was terrible and the service wasn’t any better. Never asked how we were doing or even checked on once throughout the meal until we boxed up my wife’s garbage and asked for the check. The bill was $83 I tipped a little more than 10% on top of that which was way more than deserved. Never offered a discount for the hair incident my salad nothing. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. Terrible food, terrible service. Gross kitchen...
Read moreRight on Main street, with parking on the street as well as in some of the back lots, not a problem really. Brunswick is safe and well lit and the restaurant appeared clean. Our table was clean, no food on the seats or anything like that (pet peeve of mine). Festive and alive surroundings.
Side Note: We visited Little Tokyo quite a while back and was completely disappointed in the drinks (little to no alcohol, tasted bad) and they charged us for food we didn't get. Unfortunately I didn't notice until I got home. I did complain and I will say that the manager was a stand up person. She told me to come back and try it again and to let her know when we arrive and she would ensure that our meal was free. You can't really ask for more than that, so I applaud them for that.
We did return a couple of times, (but didn't ask for a free meal), and I will say that the food was served quickly and the bill was correct, so no complaints there, however the drinks were still terrible. We even ordered extra shots to put in the drinks but they just didn't mix them right, something was way off and we didn't enjoy them.
The seafood soup is pretty good and at $7 it is worth it. It's different but good. We split some shrimp tempura, $10, and it was flaky and crunchy as was the chicken teriyaki, $18. We didn't try any of the sushi on any of our visits, but maybe the next time.
Overall Little Tokyo is a fun and festive restaurant that has good food and a younger crowd, but still very friendly. Great service...
Read moreNow that I'm living in Harpswell, it's a great adventure to get out into nearby Brunswick and sample all the local places. One of the first culinary adventures on our tour: Little Tokyo on Maine Street. The restaurant itself is adorable, and I admired the photographs for sale on the walls and the cute paper lanterns. We were fortunate to sit right next to the window, looking out over the hustle and bustle of the downtown. For appetizers, my husband and I tried a delicious sashimi platter and a cucumber horn filled with tuna, avocado and a tangy orange sauce. We were leery of sushi and sashimi before our visit; Little Tokyo, however, soothed our fears with the freshest pieces of fish we've ever tasted. They were scrumptious and smooth, perfectly paired with the sting of wasabi and the saltiness of soy sauce. For entrees, my husband tried a fabulous roll with eel and shrimp, while I opted for the teriyaki scallops. Both were amazing. Service was excellent, and we would definitely consider takeout or inviting friends there for dinner out! PS: And don't be afraid to ask for a fork: the use of chopsticks is great when wrangling sushi and sashimi, but it's a bit tricky with rice. Our server was more than happy to oblige with...
