Summary: Go, try it. I promise you will leave with a whole new conception of this type of dessert.
Experience: Walking into the store reminds you much of a small town ice cream parlor, but with subtle hints that play off the "vampire penguin" theme. A black victorian gothic couch with a high back that has embedded crystal-like gems sits against one wall. Mock black candelabras with little bats act as the center piece for each rustic table.
As you consider the menu items, it feels very familiar, only replacing "ice cream" with "snow." So, you pick your go to item, for me it was the Butterfinger flavored one playfully named "Butter Penguin," and you have a seat.
Moments later you are taken back by the expertly plated dish sat in front of you which has a perfectly symmetrical mound of ice cream looking goodness covered in a variety of toppings. You will think to yourself, "eh, presentation is good, but this isn't ice cream," and then scoop out a bite with a black spoon.
Then, the light and airy substance melts on your tongue and you realize there is nothing that you can compare this to, for this is a whole new experience to anyone that has never had "shaved snow." You receive all the joys that ice cream brings without the heaviness or guilt afterwards. It is a remarkable dish that will make you want to keep coming...
Read moreNext time you are in downtown Brunswick, with or without the kids, stop in to one of the newest dessert places in town. I had never heard of them before so it was a totally new experience for me and the kids.
Vampire Penguin is a very unique dessert experience. It's not ice cream at all and it's kinda like shaved ice. It's like someone combined them together for a brand new idea. I don't have any dietary restrictions so I don't know about sugar free or gluten free options but they probably do, as that's the thing to offer these days. I included a picture of one of the menus too.
The flavor choices are endless and they offer custom flavored and themed dishes that will make it hard to decide which one to try. Everytime I take the kids there we try a different one and still haven't found a favorite as they are all delicious.
It's a small shop off of Norwich St and there isn't a lot of parking out front, as it's a busy block, so you may have to park around the corner and it's a short walk, the blocks are actually small.
Inside it's cute and welcoming, the hard drawn art is both entertaining and plentiful. A big oversized chair makes for an awesome backdrop for some pics to remember your celebration if that's what you came for. We visit probably once a month just for the...
Read moreWhat a cool place located in downtown Brunswick, we walked in, and we're immediately greeted by a couple of ladies who were kind and courteous and friendly. We knew we were in the right place. I had never been here before. And we were with six other family members, two of them being children, and they took their time and explained everything
The only regret I have is I didn't ask the young lady's name at the register because she couldn't have been better. I asked her what her favorite was, and she said, "Strawberry cheesecake," so I ordered that one. Her father's was the banana, so we ordered that one as well, and my wife got the butterfingers
For shaved ice, it does not resemble the texture of ice cream, but it tastes just like it with the condensed milk. It was truly a memorable experience, and I would go back in a heartbeat. The flavors were unbelievable, and the strawberries and bananas refreshas could be. highly...
