How to temper the mixed review by keeping the star high and the monologue honest. I had a nice moment at this place with my husband, we ended up having an appetizer and 2 non alcoholic beverages. Which wasn't the plan, we were planning on having dinner... Now the way it all went down was a mistake by the waiter, I want to be clear about that. Although he was nice and smiled he steered us wrong with a single suggestion that we upgraded to a 8 piece option when we ordered the shrimp stuffed jalapenos poppers. Ok, that would have made great sense if we were a party sitting around a table, but it was in fact my husband and I. So he up-sold us a 16.50 app into a 33.00 tray of the most unnaturally large jalapenos I've ever seen. Big bulky deep fried appetizer... and with a lemonade and an iced tea we spent $50 dollars with a tip. I personally felt used rather than treated...not unlike a spam situation. They did not gain our loyalty or make us feel they had our best interest in mind. the waiter didn't asses the situation and we didn't even want any more food after we ate a whole tray of these huge peppers with a shrimp in the center. Heres the thing we went there because someone told us these rattails or whatever they call them are so great. And I think they were ok, they would not pass the Gordon Ramsey BS test and they didn't pass for me either. I will classify them as more gimmick than good. We probably could have been a totally different experience if we would have just ordered a different app or not an app at all. I've eaten ocean side before and I think that's what they are acting like here. We could see the water from our booth, but only by staring through the packed table next to us. How long to look before the people at that table feel weird, and here's the other thing, that refused to put us in open tables against the window, saying they had a reservation, but those sat empty the whole time. I've worked in enough restaurants to know, they didn't want to waste the good table on us. So be it, the feeling is mutual, if they would have given us the nice table and not steered us in the wrong direction with these mediocre gimmicky apps. Also, there were a lot of ways to put jalapenos and shrimp together and this one is not the tastiest... They were ok, it's like this, if I would have eaten one or even two of these, I may have said, yeah those were good. So, next time I'm in the area, I'll instead try the bubba gumps, which looks way friendlier with a pouch, way more river, outdoor vibe.. technically probably the same owners cause its all in the Golden Nugget. Bubba's looked a little less pricey, and we are ok with spending some money on a good experience...
but don't take advantage like you think I'm sitting on your yaught, when I am clearing in a tiny booth jammed up with everyone else who wanted to see the river. Oh and don't get me started on the drink menus with no prices on the menu. They were carrying those things around like they are the new gold mine. Sometimes I think finding a place that genuinely works to have their guest feel treated by the experience of supporting their restaurant is the unicorn that became extinct. As an after thought I want to mention the good, the ranch was thinking but extremely tasty, in a way it did make the whole app better. And the shoe string onion rings were pretty yummy. I think if you order right or just hate money you could have success by ordering a...
Read moreWe had reservations, as one does during these restrictions. We waited for a few parties ahead of us without reservations to get pushy before giving up as the restaurant did not have the room to accommodate them.
Once we made our way to the hostess, we were seated right away.
They were understaffed it seemed as there was a bit of a delay, but I 100% chock that up to the current situation of things, not actual poor service. Once our server made it to us she took our drink orders and we had already decided on apps and dinner.
Drinks: Texas Iced Tea (13), barrel aged Manhattan (10), tropical sangria (10) All descriptions in the menu, prices are not.
For a take on a long Island iced tea, it tasted fine, however I had it on an empty stomach while waiting and I had zero effects. Even a weak pour of an iced tea should have had some noticeable effect. Most places limit you to 2, if they pour it right. This shockingly had none. Not sure what they put in it. Manhattan was better--hard to get away with no bourbon when it's the lead of the drink. Wife said she could feel her sangria after awhile. Very fruity, pineapple being the center of attention. Advice: skip the tea. Most expensive, least kick.
Apps: queso fresco, fried pickles and peppers.
The queso has a picture in the menu showing some shredded steak on it, but the description says Pico and shallots. There was no meat when it came. It was good. Standard, nothing to stand out. The chips seemed to be fresh made? They still had some oil glistening on them. It was good.
Fried pickles and peppers were also standard, but I enjoyed them. The jalapeños were deseeded but still had decent spice (not "hot"). They seemed to have a combination of pickles--both dill based, but sometimes we got a slightly different (also good) seasoning. At first I though it was bread and butter pickles, which I hate, but after continuing to chew, it was actually good and not sweet at all. It worked really well.
Main: silver star porterhouse, medium rare. Pats ribeye, medium. Both steaks were cooked exactly as we wanted them. The seasoning initially was light, but the seasoned butter that came on top of the steak was perfect once spread out, no need to add salt. It was a garlic butter with other seasonings and it complimented the steaks perfectly. While not the best steak we've had out (home cooked will always best restaurant), these were definitely not disappointing and we both enjoyed them. Nothing bad to say about them, if you order steak here, you should be satisfied. I mean...thats their primary function, so I'm glad they do it well!
Staff was very friendly and apologetic about the delays, they did a great job, all of them.
I would absolutely dine here again and other than a weak pour from bar, we really...
Read moreWe requested a reservation for 13. Was refused, but asked to arrive an hour early on the day we wished to dine. Our party had 2 separate Landry's membership cards, on arrival we were quoted 2-2.5 hr wait. A nice hostess said 15 minutes better with the Landrys card, not so pleasant hostess interjected that is not allowed above a party of 6. She started to long quote policy. We thanked her and said we are not arguing. No worries. We went next door. Immediately seated, treated great at the bar with appetizers, drinks, great service for the 2+hr wait at other restaurant. Finally seated after 2.5hrs. 5 of our party not able to wait 2 hours called off. We let hostess know after 1 hour waiting. Table of 8. Likely inexperienced server took drink and food orders ok. Seemed ok and nice, but rarely checked table after unbelievable long waits. Food came out. 7 of 8 cooked to order and good. One 50$ steak ordered medium cooked well. Reluctantly sent back for remake. 30 minutes later a rare or less steak arrived. Kept it. Thanked them. Didn't eat it. Took it home cooked up just fine. Had a nice dinner the next night. Thank you to the manager who immediately came to table. Apologized and assured us yet would get it right out. Also thank you for the adjustment we didn't ask for on the bill. Super appreciated. I will not down grade Saltgrass for the well done instead of medium. No big deal. The rare in correction was not a good correction. But the 2.5 hour wait, rude hostess and super slow- absent server were poor. The manager was good. At one point when one of our party asked for a box... when she left, a joke was made "four hours later" all laughed. She didn't ask if we needed to split the bill or if we wanted desserts. We just paid it so as one bill. No big. We handled it... importantly, glad I had eaten at saltgrass Richardson TX, San Antonio river walk and Nashville, grand ol opre locations and had all great experiences with great food and service. If this has been my first or second, I may have...
