Okay, fine. Bay Area, you win this one. Coming from Boston, I maintain the best hard ice cream in the U.S. comes from New England. I still maintain this. JP Licks, Toscanini's, New City Microcreamery, there are too many unbeatable places. BUT...Salt & Straw's flavor game is LIT. Raspberry crumble with toasted anise? Mt. Tam cheese with ACME bread? Jasmine milk tea? So many awesome awesome things to try!
Service-wise, I am also really impressed. Given their flavor game is so innovative and interesting, I was really afraid that I would want to try too many things before deciding. But despite the long line, they had enough employees to actually come OUT to the line (I wasn't even to the case yet) and he encouraged me to try as many flavors as I wanted. I loved that, as someone who knows her eyes are bigger than her stomach.
A scoop was $5 and don't let the line deter you; it moves pretty quickly and you'll be agonizing over the flavors while you...
Read moreSalt & Straw on Burlingame Avenue offers a variety of flavors that will appeal to all taste buds. They have gluten free ice cream (!). Today there were seasonal berry in 5 flavors. Interesting combinations such as an Indian Lassi with berries. My favorite is the cold brew with cashew pralines. It gives me the caffeine boost I need in the afternoon which is when I (and many other customers) descend on the shop. Giveaways were a temporary tattoo and regular stickers today for “National Ice Cream Day!” It was hot in Burlingame. Ice cream was just the right snack to cool off & continue my enjoyment of the day.
8/13/21 Who could resist? Returned again because the ice cream is delicious! They had just started the Campfire new menu series...great (!) new flavors to check out. And they resumed giving out tastes! I adore the coffee toffee cashew praline. The scoop staff suggested I combine it with the chewy chocolate brownie. This is a...

Chocolate Nocino Cherry Pie: Excellent dark chocolate to sweet ratio, maraschino cherries are well distributed and have only a light kick. Brandy flavor is not too forward and is a welcome accent. Crumble is of excellent consistency and crunch, not too soggy from all of the milk product. Would appreciate a little more crumble and less cherry for a proper cream, cherry, crumble ratio.
Baked Brie and Fig Cheescake: Deliciously creamy and indulgent. The salted cream base is a fantastic background for the mixture of flavors. Ribbons of fig jam are evenly dispersed and provide delightful surprises of sweet jammy figness. Last comes the ritz crackers to add that extra salty tingle and complete the perfect bite. It would have been better if the ritz crackers were not so finely ground and had bigger chunks embedded rather...
