2nd night in a row, not our first visit. Food and desserts have been great until tonight! I was completely humiliated! I like a lot of people eat one thing at a time. Almost always do. We had been the night before I really was wanting dessert. But I had not had dinner so we had brought the family and decided to have dinner. I ordered the chicken tenders with sweet potato fries. The dinner was absolutely great, UNTIL ! I still have all of my sweet potato fries, and one and a half chicken tenders left. And I bite in and a hair is wrapped around the tender and had been cooked in it. I had a little trouble pulling it from my mouth, becoming nauseous and not wanting attention. Just as I did the waitress stopped at our table and ask if everything was alright and ask did we need anything. It had just then happened and I quietly say to her I have an issue. I explained, and she expressed sincere apologies walked away. The rest of my family is still eating! And then a female walks over to our table and boasts out loud how she is sorry I found a hair in my food, but being as I had eaten the majority of the chicken she had to charge me for it but did take $3 of for the inconvenience here’s your check is everything else okay? I could not speak! Completely humiliating! I did not mention the hair because I wanted free food! I felt I needed to let someone know! (It happens) but I wanted to talk to the manager because I just felt I needed to let them know how the employees act to their patrons. Well I was told that the one that spoke to me was the acting manager. I ask for someone over her. There wasn’t anyone reachable at the time she was the only one there. So now this is what I must do to let the owner/manager know my side of this event. This is exactly what happened and we did not get dessert! Our waitress came back to be sure everything was okay. I told her the issue I had with the manager. She just kept apologizing. No matter what or where you never really know what you are eating. You can’t help it things just happen! BUT, BUT,BUT !!! YOU BETTER WATCH HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE! People know people here! Attitude will kill Buisness. I cannot say I will go back! I can’t say I won’t either! But no time soon! Thanks for reading! If I’m in the wrong please let me know! I...
Read moreAt first glance, Angelina Café does not seem all that different from the multitude of Greek-owned Southern diners in the area. It’s situated in a large building that has seen better days, and its menu is huge. Dig a little deeper, however, and you’ll find a few things that set this Burlington spot apart. There’s a selection of sweet and savory crepes, they do cocktails and coffee drinks, and there are a bunch of tasty-looking cakes on display up front.
The café was bustling when our group of three arrived, but neither the ten-minute wait for our table nor the kitchen’s turnaround time was unreasonable in light of how busy the establishment was. That our server was courteous and attentive throughout the meal added to the sense that Angelina can handle the volume it likely receives on a daily basis.
A nightmare for the indecisive, the menu offers lots and lots of choices. Breakfast is served until 2, and options include benedicts, sandwiches, waffles, pancakes, omelets, skillets, combos, and more. The lunch/dinner selections add salads, burgers, Italian dishes, house specialties, a few steaks, and the aforementioned crepes. Everything from a fried tenderloin biscuit to lobster ravioli is for the taking here.
Our group opted to do breakfast for lunch, and I went with a smoked sausage breakfast sandwich, eggs scrambled, with potatoes on the side. It made for a very satisfying bite. Avocado and tomato balanced the saltiness of the meat nicely, and the brioche bun held everything together. The potatoes didn’t lack flavor, but they were crisp to the point of nearly burned. Even in that state, they may have been a safer bet than the grits (yellow, gloppy, and decidedly unappealing) that one of our group ordered. At least the pricing ($10 for a sandwich and a side, $9 apiece for breakfast specials with eggs/meat/side/bread) left no room for complaint.
The sign out front proclaims “Scratch Kitchen & Bar,” and between that and the menu’s Euro touches, you can be forgiven for thinking Angelina is striving to be something more than a diner. By that metric, the execution lags behind the ambition. But come here with more modest expectations, and you can appreciate the variety, value (and food, when they get it right) on...
Read moreA friend and I went there last night for dinner. We were there at 6PM and it was not busy. I got there first so the hostess seated me and asked what I would like to drink. I noticed when she was deciding where to seat us, she made eye contact with the waitress in the middle of the restaurant who had most of her tables full. To my right, there were only a couple of people eating. I saw the look the waitress gave her.....like I already have too many. My friend arrived a couple of minutes later. Thankfully I told the first girl what we wanted to drink. We sat there for at least 15 minutes while our waitress went by and never stopped to say she'd help us soon, or even acknowledge we were there. Finally my friend went to the hostess and asked if someone could take our order. It ended up being the hostess because I guess our waitress was busy. Hopefully you like bacon and pimento cheese. Almost every menu item had one of the two. I ordered a BLT and omitted the pimento cheese. The sandwich was dry and the toast made my gums hurt. The "loaded" garlic mashed potatoes were pretty tasteless. We finished and then sat and sat waiting for anyone to stop by to clear the table and bring our check. We finally had to go back to the hostess station to ask for a check. Before leaving, we decided to get a dessert to take home. Again, had to finally ask one of the girls behind the counter if we could please order. I chose one called Peanut Butter Bomb or something. The title made it sound very peanut buttery. My friend got coconut pineapple cake. We texted later and she said her cake was good. Mine was a decent chocolate cake but there was not a hint of peanut butter flavor. I don't usually comment on places I eat, but this was pretty disappointing. It wasn't even busy, so if you plan to visit, make sure it's during a slow time. I can't imagine the service if it was busy. If the food had been great it might be worth the lousy service, but it was just ho-hum. I got a BLT and onion strings with a Pepsi. It was $17 and I would have rather spent that on a steak at Texas Roadhouse. The slice of cake was $6 which is fine but there was no peanut...
