Well, we went off the beaten “north/south” route of Hwy 281, to find Mama’s. A four overall. Not pictured, we’re my wife’s wings which were fresh but battered and fried, which is a disappointment as I just done think battered wings hold up to sauce. This is likely known by kitchen as the sauce was served on the side when delivered. The Onion Rings were impressive and my 1/2 lb patty melt was moist and juicy but not greasy, so BRAVO. Nice that sweet potato fries were lightly seasoned with salt and cinnamon. Delicious! And finally the Texas Sheet Cake, seemed to be made in house, but I believe the icing/frosting was premade and not blended by “mama”. Service was friendly and prompt and it had a laid back rustic feel, which I liked. Well worth the 0.4 mile drive and absolutely superior to any of the “chain” gang of usual suspects.

Besides Boomers, customer service died in our Love in the Time of COVID, but unlike a magical reality novel, deeper meaning cannot be derived from a surly server. And yes, our server was classically surly, as in ye tyme of oldye, with hardly a grunt, nod or even a "want more water?!" long after we had paid and were making to leave. However, despite the service as cold as the long since dry ice cubes in my water glass, the food, as long held, was indeed excellent. I had the chicken fried steak and my wife had the chicken fried chicken. The breading was light, fluffy, crisp and freshly fried. The sides were also excellent. The prices were appropriate to the quality and portions. We had the cheesecake, which was of the dense variety. All in all, excellent food, good prices and portions and 1950s diner style surly wait staff.

I went here with my family yesterday because my Dad has been wanting to try it. When you walk in you get that small hometown welcome feel. We ordered the Chicken fried chicken, Chicken friend steal, Cheeseburger and the Saturday special - Chicken Parmigian. I was more than pleased with the special, very delicious and I HIGHLY recommend trying it. My sister said burger didn't have much flavor. Service was good. Our waitress was friendly. The only bad things I have to say would be about the bread & drinks. If the bread was served warm I think it would have tasted better. My Mom had a frozen margarita, my sister and I had Mexican Martinis. The Mexican Martinis tasted very watered down with a hint of sweetness. I wouldn't order it again. Overall the experience was a good one and it's worth giving this place a try!

Update: Its been since August 2020 that we last visited your restaurant and wrote the review below, but as of yet we have not received a response or reply from the owner or management of Mama's Home Cooking restaurant. It is now Oct 7, 2020. Seems like they don't care about their customers anymore.

My wife sent a previous review today, this is my comment below.

I agree with what she wrote. I will add that the intoxicated guy they set at the table next to us, smelled bad, had long matted up hair, and dressed like a homeless person. He was coughing and hacking repeatedly without covering his mouth. The waitress called this guy by name and even though it was obvious he was intoxicated they served him 2 beers while he waited for his to go order. With Covid-19 we were extremely uncomfortable and concerned this guy was sick and may have exposed us to the covid-19 virus! My wife has cancer and is higher risk.

We are both highly disappointed in this bad experience!

As stated we will not be coming back to your restaurant.

My wife's original review is below in quote.

"Normally, we really like the food and service here. But, this last visit, we didn't have a good experience. Note the following.

*We arrived and asked for a booth to the seating person. She asked if we would mind sitting in the back. we said that was fine and she started to take us back. This other lady abruptly intervened and told the seater no, that was not going to happen and sat us down close to the entrance without explaining to us directly why she could not take us back to the back section. Guess it was closed. We really didn't care in the whole sceme of things but this other lead person should have been more people friendly. We felt very uncomfortable and unwelcome by her.

*Then, a guy came in, obviously there to pick up an order and they sat him down at the next table to us. All well and good but he was obviously intoxicated or something. He was coughing and hacking and he took his mask off. The waitress knew who he was as this was not the first time he has been there. Maybe a local or something. She served him 2 beers while waiting. We felt even more uncomfortable. Not a good situation to witness.

*We then got our food and the taste and temperature of the food was aweful. So opposite of the atmosphere, comfort, and service we have had before! I told the waitress that my potatoes and gravy were cold and all she said was that the cook woIld be told and nothing more. She kept forgetting to bring things we asked for.

In summary, we have decided that we will not visit this restaurant anymore due to the overall poor experience. Sad to see the downward trend in service, food and atmosphere we have experienced before. We normally leave this place happy and welcomed to come back. Sorry about the negative review but we feel you need to know...

Server and service were awesome! The food? well, not bad, but not great. We both had chicken fried steak which was bland with no real flavor. The crust was about an inch wider all the way around than the steak, was crispy but buried under a thick blanket of cream gravy, it didn't stay that way long. The gravy had more flavor than the steak but I would ask for it on the side next time. The Mac and Cheese is really penne and cheese, but man is it good! 👍 I also had the pinto beans and while the flavor was excellent, they were a bit too 'tooth hard" and could've stayed in the pot about 15-20 mins more. The hubs had fried okra and he said it was the best he's had in a very long time. 👍 But the biggest disappointment was the piece of Bourbon pecan pie we took to go. We got it home and warmed it a few seconds in the microwave and took the first bite. There was no flavor at all and definitely no bourbon flavor. The pecans tasted "soft" as my dad would say, when he thought they were going stale. There was some sort of gelatin-like custard instead of the syrupy, molasses, sugar custard usually found in pecan pie. While it wasn't as sweet, it also lacked any flavor. I hate to say that about pecan pie of any kind, but I've never been so disappointed about a pecan pie either. All in all its a good place, but some seasoning in the CFS and the Bourbon pecan pie, would bring me back...
