Solid 3.5/5 for Lone Star. Heard this place was on triple D (Diners, Drive Ins, & Dives) so had to try it out ! I ordered a side of salsa and guacamole and to my pleasant surprise I was so happy with the result. A Taco bar can serve bad grilled corn and a bad mojito but the guac and salsa MUST be memorable. The salsa was tangy and filled with flavour. It was a great balance of tomatoes, onions, limes and seasoning. The guac was very good as well. It's made to order so it was the last dish to come out after the tacos and salsa. I usually always want my guac and salsa first so I could use those as toppings on my tacos but it was worth the wait. It was presented in a beautiful ceramic bowl but it really wasn't worth the $9. I would expect a large bowl of guac (especially being in 'Murica) but it was probably only a small avocado worth. Still good though.
Ordered crispy fish tacos, beef barbacoa and a spicy chorizo taco. Fish taco was average, deep fried fish with pickled cabbage. The fish was lacking a lot of seasoning, a simple salt and pepper would have elevated the dish so much. The chorizo taco was decent but would definitely not order again. It wasnt spicy enough and didnt have enough elements to elevate the taco to make it out of the ordinary. The beef barbacoa was definitely the best one out of the three. The meat was juicy and flavoured really well, a little spicy and salty.
Grilled corn - I've had blackened corn before but my order was over cooked to the point where I didnt enjoy it anymore. One side was grilled for too long making the kernels hard and drained all the moisture. The sauce could have used a little more spice but thats just personal preference.
The service was alright. We were a large group (6 people) and the resto was packed, they tried to accommodate to us, so we patiently waited as they cleared out a table. The staff was very friendly. Service was a little slow but there were only three waiters. Literally took at least 8 minutes when I asked for chips. Overall, I was happy with the service and food. I would recommend this place but there are better tacos...
Read moreMy cat Nox LOVES bread. It’s her favorite human food to steal, and she’s extremely photogenic, so she gets away with it too.
Let’s get down to brass tax. While El Cruncho Supremo may indeed be El, it isn’t truly so Cruncho, nor is it particularly Supremo. But it IS wrapped in tortilla, and tortilla is made out of dough, and dough is what a small photogenic cat like Noxler is after. She is a mathematician insofar as the cube theory of food applies (e.g. “is a pizza technically an open faced sandwich”), and she excels at the equation because her answer is “I will eat that bread while you are not paying attention”.
Now Omelette (my dog), she couldn’t give a damn. Cruncho or Notto, she is concerned with the proverbial Bread of Sleep, on the couch particularly, which is a couch that “belongs” to me only in a hypothetical sense (though I did pay American Dollars for it) because she spends most of her time on it (and time, as we all know, is money) so in reality SHE is the true owner of the couch, at least in a broadly financial sense if you squint your eyes. Or not, I don’t know, I was just kinda zoning out while eating the Cruncho Supremo.
It’s an alright sandwich. Or dumpling. I don’t know, apply the cube theory of food to it and see what sticks. Don’t expect too much Crunch nor that much Supreme. But DO expect an extremely cute little black cat with no tail (she was born without it) to muscle her big round eyes in front of you and stare, with malicious intent, at El. And if your question is “will she steal a bite when I’m not looking?” I would not recommend you or the dog lose any sleep over...
Read moreWe had an early-ish dinner at LS. Surprisingly, there were quite a few people already there, so all the outdoor tables were taken. We sat inside at a booth which is smaller than the standard size. There were 4 of us so it was a snug fit.
The menu offerings are more 'adventurous' than we were all used to. I enjoyed the Grilled Avocado with braised tofu tacos, but the Veracruz Fish taco was spicier than I expected (still good but really quite spicy).
My husband didn't like the chicken quesadilla that much. We both enjoyed the Roasted Tomato Salsa with chips. The vegan Guacamole was good too.
The chips and salsa are not complimentary, but the chips are hands down one of the best I've tried. Crispy and not too salty.
One thing I noticed right away was that each taco had a single corn tortilla holding it together. I would expect at least 2 corn tortillas per taco since they're soft tortillas and can easily break apart.
Service was ok. One thing, when I asked for the check, the server came with a handheld device that could scan your credit card. She told me the total $ amount, but didn't bother to display the itemized receipt on the screen. We ordered a lot of items, a few more than the ones I already mentioned. I would have liked to give the receipt a lookover before paying. But we were in a hurry so I paid with my card and opted to have the receipt sent to me via text.
I wouldn't mind trying out the Allston location sometime, but we most likely won't come back to the Cambridge location anytime soon. It's not bad, but it's a little out of the way for us and we like other places more...
