Sumo Japanese Grill — Restaurant in Canton Township

This place was a complete wreck last night. Carryout-only; we went in at 7:45PM, we didn't get out until almost 9PM (it closes at 8:30PM).

We made our order and they didn't tell us how long it would be. There were other people waiting, but it didn't look like too many. Later, someone who ordered before us asks how long it's going to be, and they replied, "at least 45 minutes, we haven't even started your order yet." Well, that was a little surprising to hear. We were kind of in a hurry and that's why we wanted get take-out in the first place, but we already paid and invested some time.

A number of customers who phoned in their orders came in and not a single one of their orders were ready. They were not moving food at all and people were getting upset Later, someone comes in with a big, $100+ phone order. Their order wasn't ready yet. So you're telling me you had that big order plus a number of other orders and you didn't warn us it would take 45 mins. to an hour, or at least longer than usual? Careless and irresponsible.

At one point, they had some phone orders ready that no one picked up. They were trying to figure out what to do with the food and a customer said, "can I have it?" The employee responded, "maybe you can have it at a discounted price." Are you kidding me? You have all these people that have been waiting over an hour for their food, and you can't give them food that you're going to throw away or let employees take home?

After all that time and finally getting our food, they never offered us any more than an apology. No discount, no coupons or certificates, and clearly no extra food. Very...

My favorite takeout place at the moment. Takeout only, no seats for dining in. I've been eating here regularly for the last few months, food quality is very consistent. No bad experiences. Prices are fair (even a little cheap compared to others at the moment). Location is small, not the cleanest but not uncared for. Location/parking lot sucks. Wait times can get a little long around lunch/dinner.

Everything I've ordered (about 80% of the menu, I'm not into salads) has been excellent. Their noodles are simple, salt, pepper, butter/oil but are absolutely the best noodles I've ever had that were not fresh pasta made that day. Shrimp is always cooked right (not rubbery, not undercooked) and very flavorful. Steak is cooked as ordered, medium is pink in the middle with no blood; cut into strips. Much better quality meat than I would expect to pay $12 for a prepared steak. Chicken is a little plain but good with some Yum Yum sauce or drenched in soy sauce. This is absolutely the place to go for reasonably priced...

The food is great but if it makes you sick it's all for naught... The front line staff this particular evening (4/28/2025) practiced abysmal food handling procedures. They were all on the cash register, handling credit cards and cash, touching the register machines and then handling food without washing their hands or changing gloves. Mentioned how nasty it was and the guy snarled. He eventually tried just changing his gloves only but we mentioned that he should wash his hands first to not contaminate the gloves, then the prep area (he was portioning out steamed rice). About 5 minutes later the other cashier did the same thing, but this time, he was portioning out veggies (broccoli, carrots etc). I was disappointed. Then to add insult, they forgot my soup!
