My boyfriend, Sean, and I were looking to try a new place to eat locally and we decided on @the rooftop in Canton, CT. We got there at 7:15 yesterday (Monday) and the parking lot was packed…so we had a backup plan in case the wait was long .. but there wasn’t any wait time!! The place is huge with 2 big bars, plenty of dining room space and on nice days they even have a rooftop patio (with a lovely view of the parking lot, but at least the patio is not IN the parking lot!!!) The restaurant is styled very Modern so not a lot of decorations…which for me made the vibe a bit sterile, and the lighting was a bit too bright but I did like the lighting fixtures. Our servers name was Aiden, and he was delightful and on top of his games! I ordered a strawberry basil limeade that was a bit too sweet so I had it topped off with some seltzer which made it perfect, Sean had a black coffee. Which he described it as rich and definitely not from the gas station!! For our main meals I ordered sushi rolls, French Cake & Rooftop roll; Sean chose 3 types of street tacos -mahi mahi -pulled chicken and beef brisket. All of the food came out in a timely manner and Aiden checked in at appropriate intervals (no food in our mouths!) and was attentive to our needs! The menu is pretty big and has a lot of diversity so everyone in the family is bound to find something they like, but we were worried the flavor or quality may be compromised because of all of the options … NOPE!! The food was AMAZING and visually consumable! The calamari was topped with some type of slaw that added extra crunch and spice coupled with the sauce … Sean made happy noises and I wiggled in my seat as we happily shared the appetizer while anticipating our main course! Which also delighted us in many ways!! My sushi rice was cooked and seasoned properly and the fish was like butter .. no fishiness or strange textures .. just fresh fish perfectly sliced and married together with other fresh ingredients and topped with special sauces that will please your tastebuds with every bite!! That’s the other thing .. the sushi was portioned perfectly .. no obnoxious bites!! Sean was so pleased with his selections also, but said he should have listened to Aiden, 2 orders (4 tacos) is deceptively filling, but Sean mustered up the stomach and ate all 6 tacos .. with the brisket being his favorite!! Aiden offered us the dessert menu but we had pre decided already that we were having canton Creamery ice cream as our dessert!! Our concerns about the big menu have so far been squashed leaving us open to returning and trying different options!! Plus we found a new spot to bring friends and family (and clients for me!) to that can please a crew of different palettes!! I highly recommend this restaurant and if you’re seated with Aiden your guaranteed good service, even when the restaurant is...
Read moreTonight my fiancée and I dined at this gorgeous new restaurant. Gorgeous is an understatement. I want to preface this review by saying Madysen was our waitress and she was amazing! We had a reservation for the patio area at 6pm. We arrived at 5:50 and were told our table would be ready at 6:00. At 6:10 we were told our table was ready, and they began to sit us inside until we corrected that outside was were we reserved, and with some hesitation they got us a seat outside on the lower level. My fiancée was able to utilize the self service beer taps with 20ish beers on tap, 2 ciders, 2 wines. We found quickly that it was very convenient, but one thing we found quickly was to make sure the taps are closed, as people viewing were leaving taps open, and we scanned our card and wasted about $5 of beer not noticing the tap was open. To continue we were sat at approx 6:20 and ordered drinks right away and food around 6:30. Then came the waiting. We did not receive food until 8:10. We ordered: chicken wings, 3 types of tacos, and their signature burger w/ truffle fries, as well as a cocktail (strawberry lemonade). We will 100% say we found our new favorite wings! They were amazing. Everything else was very notably cold. With that being said the pork belly taco was still amazing as well. The burger was very over cooked and fries we are not really able to judge as they were cold fries. The drink was very sour and not lemonade sour, I don’t know how to explain it. After getting our food, the person who appeared to be the owner or manager walked around apologizing for the wait stating that they over booked the soft opening and keep in mind it was a soft opening. We appreciate the recognition of the error, but it seems as if they were dismissing the problem and not accepting that it is fair for people to be upset.
Overall we would go again but we will give it till fall so they have a chance to work...
Read moreSince this place has been open for about 3 months now, my family and I decided to check it out. I prefer to go when new places are settled down and already worked out most of their kinks; this way I can give them a fair review. The type of food they have is New American with a global twist; they had a vast American fusion food menu, from tacos, burgers, sushi, poke bowl, you name it, they might have it. It's part of the Zen Restaurant Group, which is a group of 5 restaurants in Connecticut. The executive chef is Dan Fortin and they have an omakase sushi bar; there is also a self serve beer and wine area, inside. The parking lot was plentiful in the Canton village plaza.
We had a late lunch on Saturday, and we were able to get a seat right away on the rooftop. The restaurant was huge and nicely designed; the rooftop was open and airy. The inside area had chandeliers and it just looked modern and classy. Even the restrooms were super nice, clean, and private. The host and our server were prompt and cordial. We had our two little wild-lings, but it was an enjoyable experience (parents, you feel me?). They had a high chair which was a plus.
I wasn't overly hungry, so I ordered a sushi roll and a cocktail. I read reviews and sushi seems to make everyone happy there. The sushi roll I had was called Dynamite ($19); it had fried fish, kani crabmeat, avocado, cream cheese topped w/ spicy tuna, caviar, green scallion, eel sauce and spicy mayo sauce; this was so good, the flavors bursted in my mouth and the sushi roll alone was 5 stars. The cocktail I had was called the Sun Toucher ($12) which had rum, orange curacao, lime juice, orgeat syrup, and dark rum float; flavors were perfect and it was topped with maraschino cherry and a piece of pineapple. The food and drinks came out at a reasonable time.
Overall, the food, drinks, and service was good. I can't wait to go back and try out more of...
