We had high hopes but were sadly very Disappointed. We arrived early, the ambiance was very nice, we loved the vintage look with a great vibe and energy. We sat at the bar and knew that during the rush it might take a little longer than usual to be served.
We started with the appetizers: Blistered Shishto peppers with Manchego cheese and Fresh Pork Cracklins with in-house jalapeno ranch dressing.
The cracklins came out next, they were hot, melt in your mouth, great flavor and a nice in-house made ranch on the side. Hot cracklins with the dressing were served fresh and were tasty.
The Red Fish was highly recommended, so I ordered it and the wife ordered the Bacon Salad w/grilled chicken, I also ordered a Side Salad with the jalapeno ranch.
Everything went downhill from there.
The side salad arrived. The dressing was supposedly already added, because the greens were wet looking and you couldn't taste any dressing. I had to request a side of dressing.
The Red Fish dished arrived and the first thing we noticed as a lack of Sprouts or Bacon, which was in the dish description. There was literally one leaf from one sprout and no bacon.
Also, the fish was clearly overcooked. This was not a matter of taste or preference. It was severely overcooked. The edges chewy like a piece of beef jerky texture and the rest of the fish was dry and totally opaque. The missing ingredients and overcooked fish, was a huge strike.
Then we realized after about 10 minutes that my wife's order was way overdue for a bacon salad with chicken order. After inquiring with staff, we learned the order was never placed. They thought my side salad order was me changing my wifes order. Weird. You would think they would confirm a major change like that.
They said they would put a rush on it and that they would comp the Bacon Salad for the inconvenience. This is major strike two, but mistakes happen and it’s a busy shift. We decide to tuff it out.
I asked the owner if they had the bread pudding, cause I am a big fan and saw a pic that looked good. He said not that night, but they had banana pudding. I responded with “never mind” but he insisted and walked away before I could say no. It was a very nice dessert, and literally the highlight of the entire dinner.
After about 25 minutes the rushed order of Bacon Ranch Salad with chicken arrived. It was also missing ingredients. It was just a big pile of greens, with no cheese, no bacon, no onion and no chicken, and we counted 5 pieces of tomatoes and cucumber. This made it appear like they knew it was a comped salad, so they just left out the higher cost ingredients. (cheese and bacon).
About 10 min later, the chicken for her salad arrived. It was rushed, unseasoned and after one bite was left untouched. Strike three.
This is not a "taste" or "preference" issue, it's a provide the actual ingredients you have listed in the entrée description issue.
By strike three we were done. We would have called out the missing ingredients on the salad to staff, but we had a sitter and had to get home.
I will say that the three things that were executed correctly were the Cracklings', the Banana Pudding and my wife's Mixed Drinks.
But leaving out ingredients in both dishes, over cooking the fish and poorly cooked chicken, made the whole night memorable as one of the most under par dining experiences we've had in a very long time.
My recommendation to Native Son is to make sure that your expeditor double checks each dish before they are served to your guests to ensure that each dish at least has all the ingredients and to maintain some sort of quality control.
Would we go back again? Very unlikely. We don't get the chance to get out often, so we like to make sure that when we do, we have the best chance at having a good experience.
Instead of putting Native Son on our never go back list, we decided to give them a year to get their act together. We won't order the same thing again. We will likely order something simple and see if we get all the ingredients and the flavor profiles are on...
Read moreFirst time here and it won’t be the last hopefully! What a cute spot in the middle of Canton, Texas!
I loved the vibe I felt once I walked in, it was small but not too small, the ladies working were absolutely amazing. They were super attentive and nice, and loved how they all checked on us to make sure we didn’t need anything.
My son and I started with drinks, I had the Transfusion which, I told my son for whatever reason took me to a different place every time I took a sip. He ordered a ranch water, they basically added tequila to a Mineragua which was fine. But he expected it to be in a fancy glass lol but nonetheless he enjoyed it!
We both ordered sandwiches, I had the Muffaletta and waffle fries that were shaken in what seems like Indian spices, just guessing loved this so much. The Muffaletta had a lot of different meats and they lathered an olive salad which gave it a very refreshing taste to it. My son had regular burger, no nonsense there he said it was delicious and cooked just right.
Overall very nice place to have dinner, I hear they have live music on certain nights! I will have to come...
